Guest guest
Hi, Viola and all - I'm the person who you and your husband visited to see our beekeeping operation before we moved south. (Our house that you saw no longer exists.) When I first went raw, I also searched for scientific answers to the claims that I had heard from those who had been doing raw for a longer time. I also searched for research about fasting. As a Registered Dietitian, I am charged with teaching based on scientifically supported information. I quickly became frustrated, because the " gold standard " research (current, published in peer-reviewed journals, not based on anecdotal reporting, repeatable) just wasn't there. I have since come to terms with the fact that there isn't a big demand for research on rawness or fasting because there's no money involved, no major products that would benefit from this research. Since most research today is funded not by private individuals or government but by money from major corporations (usual pharmaceuticals, major food corporations who have a vested interest in dairy), their results (and thus publication) will be driven by disproving any kind of dietary practice that might cost them customers. Recent reportings in the news have indeed shown that the sponsoring corporations will either allow or disallow publication of research findings depending on how they show their products. In the drive to get the research published, results have been " adjusted " to allow for that publication. So how can we trust the published studies, written by people with Ph.D.'s after their names?? Everybody is driven by money and prestige. If " adjusting " research findings allows a Ph.D. to publish in a prestigious journal such as JAMA or NEJM, given the " publish or perish " mentality in academia, who wouldn't do so? So we do have to look to the older research, the less-documented research, the anecdotal reporting, and the voices of experience to support our practices. There has been some research out of Germany and Finland that has generally been supportive of the raw diet, but concerns have arisen about vitamin B-12 and dental erosions. As far as fasting is concerned, that has been practiced since time immemorial, either intentionally for spiritual cleansing or unintentionally as food shortages arose. I am aware of one MD who had been taught in medical school that the human body cannot exist for more than a few days without food. He was suffering from various health issues that became more severe and was in a great deal of pain and discomfort, so he decided to " end it all " by not eating. Lo and behold, after a few days, not only did he not die, but he actually began to feel better, and better. He continued the fast, and when he eventually resumed eating, he found that his maladies no longer existed. He then became a major advocate of fasting. (I'm sure somebody else will provide his name in this discussion, it escapes me at this time & I don't have time to look it up this morning.) I attended a small gathering of dietitians this past week, a social but professional gathering. Over dinner (I had brought a platter of fresh seasonal fruit, somebody else actually brought a salad and served the dressing on the side, so I was able to eat ok) we were discussing " Supersize Me " . I mentioned that he plans to do a sequel, a 30-day water fast. Another RD expected that he would die with not eating for that length of time. Of course, I know better, and I mentioned that fasting is used for healing, and that I expect he would do just fine. (Of course, the key is to not do anything else, most people aren't aware of this.) I read, Viola, that you did have a negative experience with your fast. (Or maybe it was positive - but just seemed negative at the time.) Was that your first fasting experience? I would not have done 2 weeks for my first fast. I would have just done a few days. You did seem to do the appropriate things - resting instead of carrying on as normal. I really think that you had an intense healing experience. The cold symptoms that we experience are actually the body eliminating toxins from the body, I've had that happen. Consider that these were inside you all this time, and needed to be eliminated. If you read or hear Victoria's experience with longer-term fasting, you would hear her stories of tasting built-up chemical toxins in her body, how she tasted DDT years after being exposed to it as a child. So keep up your questioning, Viola, and continue to search for answers. As long as we all continue these searches, we will all learn, especially as we discuss our questions and what we learn. Guest guest
You can read her books in public library, she was eating junk food and feeding her kids junk food until her son almost died in diabetic coma. After that the whole family switched to raw diet. Sergey (her son) was 9 years old i believe, and now he is 19. I don't know how much truth in there, but if the boy was really diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and now he doesn't have to do insulin injection, then i wish whole world could now about that. --- Shari Viger <shavig wrote: > Viola wrote: " Regarding Victoria, this family are > lucky, they got VERY > healthy heredity, if I eat like them, a box of > donuts in the morning with a > gallon of milk, I will not be able to handle that > probably even a week. Guest guest
Good afternoon, Victoria has an older son who was pretty much out of the house by the time they moved to the US from Russia and hasn't gone raw (as of the last I heard). I worked with him in Redmond at my prior job. I agree that their family's hereditary health must be prettty good because he is in pretty good (apparent) health in spite of worse-than-average health and diet habits. He is shown in the family picture in Victoria's first book. It was (indirectly) through him that I started on raw foods. Guest guest
Nora, it says juvenile type in Victoria's book, which is type 1. Here is a link about juvenile type: http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Diabetes/wwwboard.html My coworker's son 14 years old got type 1 diabetes a year ago. Some people have both types 1 and 2 they call it 1.5 type. Type 2 is when cells sensitivity to insulin is weakened because of constantly too much insulin in the blood presented. Type 1 is when pancreases can't produce enough insulin anymore, same cause, too much junk carbs and oils. That boy (my coworker's son) all he was eating was french fries and cocacola. --- Nora Lenz <nmlenz wrote: > My understanding is that Sergei wasn't born with > this condition, it was > degenerative (Type II). > Degenerative disease in general is almost always > reversible, especially in > young people. Guest guest
If you read that link I sent, somebody says: Type 1 Diabetes is the result of an autoimmune attack on beta cells in the pancreas. Once beta cells have been destroyed, there is no way of getting them back again. Good thing that Victoria was not that much educated in health questions, so she didn't know that there is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes, and she was ready to try ANYTHING to avoid insulin injections for her son.
