Guest guest
Good afternoon (EST), Apparently distributors are having to go farther to get produce this Winter than in the past. I ordered (non-organic) Fuyu persimmons from a local market that had been getting them from California. By the time they came in they were no longer available from CA, the ones I got came from Israel. They didn't appear as nice (black spots throughout them) and after eating them my body was telling me that something wasn't right or good. Does anyone have any information about pesticide use or other concerns that may be characteristic in this part of the world. The brand name on the stickers is . Guest guest
Hi Nick, Actually I'm not sure if is a variety or brand name, but the black spots are a normal feature, and not a sign of decomposition. The spots are actually dark brown and for this reason, along with the fruit's intense sweetness, it has been nicknamed " chocolate " persimmon. I've only seen them in stores for the past couple years and I know the ones I got last year were from Israel as well. It's probably a sign that Israel is increasing its export market, or perhaps trade barriers have been lifted or some other reason unrelated to domestic availability. As far as I know, the persimmon harvest in California was (is) normal, although the same sure can't be said of the lettuce crop. Guest guest
Hi Nick, Take a look at http://www.innvista.com/health/foods/fruits/persim.htm The Sharon persimmon is different than the American persimmon, so it would taste different. Guest guest
Ron, Thanks for the link. I had assumed Sharon was the name of the producer. I learned something new.
