The colorful Fiesta ware dishes have been extremely popular for

decades and some of you might be eating off them. I visited their

website today and read this--notice the last line.

" Fiesta®'s styling complements a wide range of decors.

The eleven bold colors complement one another as well as a wide range

of interior palettes. Over 50 items in the line provide maximum

service options and ensure consistent tabletop styling. The

plate's coupe shape allows maximum food plating surface; sculpted

concentric rings highlight and frame the food presentation.

Alpha Alumina added to the body enhances durability and provides

superior heat retention. "

I researched Alpha Alumina online and it turns out this is aluminum

oxide. So far, I've read nothing on Medline or the Internet that

showed any concern about aluminum oxide and Alzheimers risk.

However, considering that aluminum - Alzheimers correlation is well

documented, I wanted you to have this information in case you too

wish to avoid dishes made with this material.

At this time, I don't know if the aluminum oxide is totally

contained in the interior of the plate, or whether it's part of the

entire plate under the glaze, or whether aluminum oxide molecules

stay fully contained within the plate over the years. I will ask

the Homer Laughlin China company about their Alpha Alumina and get

back to you.

Also, I don't know what, if any, other dishes contain aluminum

oxide. I just don't like the idea of aluminum in my dishes, no

matter how colorful and fun looking.

P.S. Ironically, this material is used for heat retention which raw

foodists don't need!

Good morning,

I can add what I know about alumina (chemically) although someone else will

have to say what the medical effects are. Alumina (aluminum oxide) is one

of the least reactive elements on earth (pure Aluminum is one of the most

reactive). It is the equivalent of rust, it is the black stuff that forms

on untreated aluminum and is the reason that aluminum doesn't corrode. The

thin film of alumina on pure aluminum protects the lower layers from

oxidation.

Being inert doesn't mean that it's harmless to a body, in fact because it's

inert it may stay in the bloodstream or body and block natural body

processes.

Anybody else know the details on this?

Nick
