Meniere's Disease

Tue, 26 Apr 2005 15:40:55 -0400

Has anyone on your chat linie overcome Meniere's disease through diet?

Person called me who had very badly. Been on Hacres diet 3 months, last few

weeks all raw, even did a juice fast. She is having more bouts. Could that

be detoxing? She has 5 young children and has to spend lots of time in bed

because of dizziness, etc. Does anyone know the original cause of this

disease? A deficiency? A toxic condition?

My brother has a pretty severe case of Meniere's Disease. They don't know

the cause. He has found that diet helps with some of the vertigo, but it's

not a cure. There isn't a cure at this time.

Tell your friend to hang in there. Luckily, my brother is not having

regular drop attacks, but he does have constant vertigo which at times can

make it difficult to function. There are several surgical options that can

be looked into as a last resort.

Good Luck!

On my email page I typed in menieres disease and the second one down,

" Natural Relief for Meniere's Disese " , has 16 pages of helpful information.

Including a list of herbs to take that they sell. Hope this can help your

brother. Thanks for sending this email. I keep wondering about all these new

diseases, and have to think they are related to all the pesticides in and on our

foods, and all the other chemicals too.

Hi Lois,

My mother has Meniere's, so I'm familiar with the symptoms and the

disruption they cause in a person's life. Coincidentally, I just mentioned

to someone on the Living-Foods board today that I would be willing to help

her figure out where she might be able to make improvements in her diet to

increase her chances of recovering from chronic tinnitus. She said she was

going to email me privately but I'm going to suggest to her that we do it

'publicly' so others can learn too. You might want to follow the

discussion here:

http://www.rawfoodsupport.com/read.php?f=12 & i=76103 & t=76103. Meniere's is

caused by the same factors that cause all other diseases -- inappropriate

foods, medicines, insufficient rest, exercise, sunshine, etc. There is

lots of info about the disease on the web but it's all based on either

suppressing the symptoms (as opposed to removing the cause) or the

half-hearted and ineffective approaches used by doctors (decreasing salt,

caffeine, 'prepared' foods, etc.)

Thanks Nora. What does your mother do for treatment? What is your opinion on

taking herbs as it said on that website?

Lois,

My mom followed doctors' orders for about 10 years with minimal

results, including taking OTC travel sickness meds, diuretics and

supplements, and dramatically decreasing her consumption of sodium,

caffeine and commercially prepared foods. She's only been open to

making sweeping changes to her diet for the last year or so, and even

now she eats too much junk. She's had no further drop attacks though.

She stopped taking the motion sickness meds a few years ago and has cut

back on diuretics because they are causing chronic damage to her urinary

tract (of course).

Taking remedies can be helpful in allowing a person to endure

disruptive symptoms while s/he works on removing the cause of the

illness (by fasting and major changes to the diet and lifestyle).

Personally, before I started taking herbs or meds of any kind or if my

symptoms were so debilitating they kept me in bed, I'd get myself into a

situation where I could do an extended, supervised water fast and

afterwards I'd switch immediately to a 100% raw vegan diet. If a person

can't do a long fast, changing the diet will still stop the progression

of the disease and reverse it (assuming it's reversible). Other

lifestyle factors are important too, like sleep, fresh air, etc., but

diet is #1.

I will share with you my own experience. Please take what ever may be of help

and leave the rest.

I suffered from Meniere's Disease for several years. It hit me before I started

practicing the raw diet however. I was tested for a variety of causes and was

given different forms of treatment none of which really improved my symptoms.

My diet at the time was a low salt diet which I had been practicing because both

my brothers have kidney transplants.

The condition improved in time on its own. I was told that the improvement was

called Meniere's burnout. My episodes lessened in severity and the wellness

time between bouts increased. I am thankful that the dizziness and falling down

have stopped but I have deafness in my left ear, mild tinnitus and some trouble

with balance.

A friend here in Washington shared an interesting piece of information that I

had not heard before. Her doctor found that the majority of female cases with

Meniere's, were women that were

pre-menopausal. Which was true in my case. Her treatment with a diuretic eased

her symptoms.

I wonder if hormones play a part in this condition.

When I was first diagnosed I could find only two - one paragraph articles on the

disease.

My brother found a wonder program on PBS that was a lecture to surgeons

regarding dizziness disorders with the main focus on Meniere's and the last

resort of surgery as a solution.

I found it hard to function while I was ill, but I chose not to let the

condition control my life. My family and friends knew of my condition and were

very supportive, which helped me to function as normally as possible while I was

well. I had 5 young children and both my husband I coached soccer and baseball.

Spiritually speaking I was told that this condition was my wake up call to turn

within and to work on a stronger spiritual connection which I did.

The information for understanding this disorder did not come to me until I

accepted that my condition could get worse. I prayed that I would be given the

information for the worse case scenario so that I could prepare myself mentally.

It wasn't until I accepted that possibility that my symptoms began to improve.

There is a program called Sound Therapy that claims to have helped many

Meniere's sufferers, which may or may not be of help. They also recommend trace

minerals and antioxidants for ear health which would be achieved through a raw

diet.

www.soundtheraphyinternational.com

I will keep those sufferers in my thoughts and prayers. I hope improvement will

come to them.

Light and Love

Meniere's Disease: a recurrent and ususally progressive group of symptoms

including progressive deafness, ringning in the ears, dizziness, and a

sensationof fullness or pressure in the ears; etiology unknown.

Bowen Therapy has been shown to address all theses conditions.

What's Bowen therapy? And can a raw food diet cure Meniere's disease? Do you

have Meniere's disease?

Check out www.bowtech.com or www.bowenwork.com. No, I do not have the disease,

but used to have ringing in the ears. I think a raw diet is able to cure

anything given dedication, persistence, and ingenuity.

Forgot to say: treatment for menieres disease; in acute attacks, bedrest is the

most effective treatment. (HA!) Also, antihistamines; discontinuation of

SMOKING; rarely, surgical treatment.

This is from Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary

Wait! I said I believe raw food nutrition will clear up almost anything. Other

modalities were employed to remove the ringing for me.

What were the other modalities you used or did to remove the ringing? Did you

have hearing loss? If so, did your hearing get better too?
