Guest guest
Or cold cooked fruits or vegetables! I'm amazed at how many people think that because something isn't hot, that it isn't cooked. We were served a few salads in Europe with cold canned corn or cold steamed asparagus, when we had asked for uncooked food. Guest guest
I'm flying out of Pittsburgh tomorrow AM, a major hub for USAir. I'll see if I can get a chance to ask. My flight is on Northwest. Guest guest
When I told Joe what had been written he replied " a banana and an apple " ! And you know, he's probably right. Or a salad with some kind of unknown dressing on it. The flight attendant on our flight from Germany last November felt sorry for us (never mind we'd packed enough food to put the airline-provided meals to shame) and brought us salads from First Class. I don't know what was on those salads, they looked ok, but we spent about 4-5 hours of sheer misery, with severe abdominal distress, after eating them. Never again!! I'm packing my own!! Guest guest
Actually, a banana and apple would be better than nothing. Even if I brought my own food, I'd still feel like I deserved *something* - especially since I paid for it. Guest guest
Hello All, Can't resist sharing our experience with this subject...... This was about 6 years ago but I'll never forget it. We were at that time eating about 50/50 cooked vegan/raw vegan. We flew to Fl. to join Dr. McDougall & his family for a cruise (vegan of course). We had told the airlines when we made the reservations that we were vegan and they said no problem. On the way to Fl. from Washington state we had a wonderful stuffed green pepper w/a nice salad, a roll and some fresh fruit. At that time we were so happy we couldn't wait to see what was on the menu for the return flight! On the return flight they served lunch and even though we were sitting in the middle of the plane we were last to be served. We each got a plastic bowl of alfalfa sprouts....maybe 1 cup worth. That was all! We were so hungry, I asked the flight attendant if we could get something else, maybe a roll or fruit....anything. She said there was nothing left to give us. I'm not an outspoken person but I was so hungry and angry I snapped at her and said " we're vegetarians not rabbits " . She didn't care. We haven't flown since but if we ever do we will take our own food. Worst part was, they weren't even fresh sprouts and tasted like the inside of an old refer smells so we couldn't eat them. I'm sure things are better now a days! Breezi PS I did call the airlines and complain but I was told it was up to the chef on duty to prepare the meals and they could do nothing about it. Guest guest
Hi I'm Toni Just joined your group because I'll be in Seattle in July. I'm flying from Sydney Australia to Seattle on 3rd July and requested raw food. Hawaiian Airlines have a huge list of all different diets they cater for, however, they cannot cater for me. They have no fruit meals, no salad meals, no raw meals. I'd rather take my own anyway as I eat only organic. We don't really need to eat at all (or very little) on a flight anyway as we're just sitting there. It's funny isn't it how I can find this wonderful site on the computer (a few steps forward) and then discover that people like airlines can't even cater for me (a couple of steps back). Those websites that I just read re markets are most useful. Also, I'm hoping to get to a potluck while in US. Should I ring someone while I'm there to see if it's OK to attend something of yours?? Australia is like the desert for raw fooders. We're here but spread sparsely over the country and we never meet up. I have more raw input in my life from America than Australia. best wishes, Toni Searching for the best free email? Guest guest
Well, that ain't gonna happen much longer. Most airlines are looking for ways to " save " money and food is the first to go. I remember serving roast duck in plum sauce and king crab legs when I worked for Western Airlines. Every airport had their own chefs and kitchens. Everything was freshly prepared for each flight. Now it comes in a truck. I wouldn't feed that crap to my garbage disposal. Not even the unripe, non-organic apple or banana. Shari
Guest guest
Shari, I didn't know you worked for airlines too. I worked for China Airline. I remember we served lobsters. I've only taken two flights in the past five years. I just orded fruit if meal was offered but I would always bring my own. Guest guest
Welcome, Toni. Summer time it's paradise here. My most favorite activity is berry-picking besides hiking. In July we get raspberries, Marionberries and blueberries. Blueberries are ready a little later than raspberries. Conventional cherries have already appeared in our U-district farmers' market. Organic ones don't seem to show up until about second week of July but we get the best organic cherries in the country, Bing cherries and Rainier first and then Lambert will come later. You must visit our farmers' markets. I like not only the fresh produce but also the friendly faces and the festive atmosphere. I may be prejudiced but I think our U-district farmers' market is the best. It opens Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm. I wouldn't miss farmers' market for almost any thing. After shopping you can go to Chaco Canyon cafe which is right across the street. There are about 100 hiking trails around here. Everyone who comes here pays homage to our beautiful Mt. Rainier which claims to be one of the three most beautiful national parks. Helen, Seattle
Guest guest
We love flying on China Airlines, and they prepare a wonderful (albeit non-organic) fruit meal when requested. Usually the " salad, " " entree, " and " dessert " are all fruit plates, though they also throw in a roll and butter! On one of our most recent flights (I can't remember whether it was to Honolulu on Northwest or to Mexico on Alaska), no meals were served. Boxes of " food " were for sale. One box had a bag of chips and a ham and cheese sandwich on a " croissant. " The other box was full of " snacks " : oreos, jerky, crackers, trail mix, etc. I've actually found that fasting while flying is the best option, and it seems to help with the time change/jet lag. I take my own water. Few airlines will give more than a glass of water a time. I guess they don't load enough bottles onboard. Safe travels! Guest guest
Hi, Norm! I've heard that if you prepare the fruits/veggies for eating, as in cutting them up in advance, that the airlines that might have problems in bringing them on board (I understand that flying to Hawaii can be problematic) will let you bring them on, as opposed to a fruit that is intact. With the airline food there are no guarantees re. ripeness or their being edible otherwise. We had an airline present us with totally green pears. Of course, we had no choice but to toss them out, because they were about a week away from eating stage, and you can't take the fruit into another country. Guest guest
Last time we flew to Hawaii we had to eat all the fruit we had before we got there, cut up or otherwise. Leaving Maui we had all sorts of cut up fruit (organic) and we planned to eat it on the plane, but nooooooo, that was not to be. We were placed in " quarantine " until we had eaten all the fruit we had. It was cleaned, sliced, and in baggies for consumption on the way home. Nope, they won't let you have it. You can buy underripe pineapples and have them shipped back, but you're not allowed a piece of pineapple without skin that you've cleaned yourself. Guest guest
Shari, When was that? What year? I always traveled with a big bag of Washington apples. When I went to the Big Island in 2000 for our m2m millennium bash nobody checked my fruit. I was able to bring Forest some of my Washington apples. On my way back I smuggled in a couple of mangosteens in my pocket (don't tell anybody though).
