What raw items are folks stocking in their emergency quake kits ?

I'm in Pasadena, CA now for a work trip, and found some Larabar's that are

pretty decent, and might stand being stored for a while...

I would think raw nuts and dried fruits would be good to stock up on. I

have no idea what Larabar's are.

Spirilina is recommended by Gabriel Cousens for travel/camping, and I

also try to carry it in my travel bag whenever I leave home. I usually

get the Pure Planet's Premium 100% Organic Spirulina in the plain green

& white bottle. Some of the other brands contain fillers and are not

grown organically. Dancing

I was out on my hike this morning, thinking about this topic. In

addition to the water, nuts, seeds, and dried crackers, fruits, etc.,

I was thinking that perhaps making some of the " power sticks " (pate

rolled pencil-thin in nori sheets) might be a good idea...... It would

be great if I always had enough bananas on hand to be able to throw

some into the emergency kit at the last moment, too.

Hi Raw Seattle!

OK, so either you guys are going to think I'm a paranoid survivalist or else

you are going to agree with me that we have big doo doo coming our way on

this planet, and we can't really know where disaster will hit or what it

will be although we can guess. What I'm doing is preparing for what could

be a number of disasters. I usually have 2 housemates that have no

preparation, so I choose to have more food and water than I think I would

need, to cover3-4 people right now. I keep 25 gallons H2O (minimum) stored,

often storing up to 75 gal. drinkable H2O in 5 gal plastic containers that

are continuously rotated I have a stash of varying amounts of sproutable

edible seeds & beans stored in 5 gal. containers. I have flashlights,

batteries, candles stored and I rotate the batteries. I just bought almost

a cord of wood and I'm thinking about a fireplace insert that would work by

convection as well as by fan. Earlier I installed a gas heater in my

basement/lower level that can be hand lit and is not dependent upon

electricity. I have ordered an instruction sheet on how to turn of the gas

at the meter since my idiot mind just cannot figure it out from looking at

the meter, and the instructions should arrive soon from PSE on how to shut

off the gas in an emergency. I've established a pre-designated " safety

zone " within my house and stored most food in that area, some in a second

area of different access so if the first was hard to get to right away I

would use that. I'm still working on it. I'm watching for sales now. I

recently bought some dried fruit, medicinal tea, some homeopathic remedies,

and I decided to buy some vacume sealed soy milk recently. Last night I

soaked & preped to make food bars for later in the week and I'm going to

start vacume sealing part of the dehydrated foods that I make and putting

them away. I will be rotating these foods with use as I make fresh. I'm

discovering ideas and adding these to my " to do " list, disaster survival

supplies. I'm going to get rid of my street bicycle and get a mountain

bicycle and keep it in my van. I want to get a better radio. I plan to buy

a small gasoline powered chain saw and keep it in my van in a box with an

empty gas can. I currently have a box in my van that has a space blanket, a

tarp, compact style of camp stove, a flint thing so I don't have to depend

on matches, wooden matches in a sealed container, flairs, chains, tools,

snacks, water which I need to replace. Man, I should have gotten a packed

backpack set up with " to go " emergency gear years ago. And I should have

finished looking into a gun. I'm glad I took shooting training years ago.

I'm going to start dehydrated fresh produce that I find on sale and vacume

seal it, which I should have begun a long time ago.

And I'm trying to live my life now helping others with the things that I do

until it looks like they need helping (when and if disaster hits). Then I

plan to be helping. I am hoping to be given enough time to prepare enough,

to do some good when the going gets tough. (That last sentence just might

become part of another song)

If we prepare to be helpers, we will be less likely to be in a horrible

position where we will be the victim and need help.

It's really a selfish attitude, being the helper

I would love the Raw Food Group members to keep sharing ideas for

preparation.

This came up on another list and we decided to fast.

And while the sprouts are a good idea they will take up a lot of your water

for their soaking and rinsing. Not worth it in the long run, for me.

Seaweed: Kelp, Dulse, & Alaria from a integrity harvested source and

dried low temp is another item to add to your backpack. Also think

about B-12 supplimentation (yeast free).

Ever since the Seattle earthquake ( & healing from a major surgery),

whenever I come down to the big city by train, especially in the

winter), I carry lots of water & some food with me, wear good hiking

shoes, bring lots of warm raingear layers & hat/gloves, a small

ground pad to rest on, and an emergency tarp to cover up with if I'm

tired, extra meds & algea tablets, & water purification tabs. Plus a

tiny radio and extra batteries, headlamp & good map & compass,

sunscreen & address book. All this fits in or on my fanny pack.

In my pocket I carry extra tiny flashlight, knife & whistle.

If you know how to camp & hike, alot is common sense...and unique to

the timing & location of where you are when trouble comes.... I also

bring a wheeled dolly (or bicycle), to carry my city stuff around in

to conserve energy & my back. My spouse & I have a plan for multiple

places where to meet if our home is not safe to return to and who to

call out of state to coordinate our locations with. Our home site is

well stocked, mostly because we appreciate homesteading and do not

like to shop often. We are also moving towards giving away a lot of

unused " stuff " in our space to simplify & share the resources.

Thanks to Janake & others who are stocking up on water to share. Wish

I had your Seattle address.

Breathing deep, praise & prayer/meditation often, helping others,

trusting instincts, staying calm.

May all your dreams be sweet and your days filled with wonder &

appreciation of life's miracles.
