Guest guest
Hi, I have been learning about raw for about 8 months. Just recently I went to a seminar on Ayurvedic Nutrition. According to Ayurveda, people of the vata constitution in general need to be eating all cooked veggies. I am just a little confused because it seems that raw and ayurvedic principles are opposites of each other in some regards. Does anyone have further info about these two subjects and how to bridge the information included in both to create something compatible? Thanks! Guest guest
All raw is primarily a U.S. dietary phenomenon. There are many dietary paradigms such as Ayurvedic and macrobiotic (to name 2 ) which use little or no raw foods. I do not know of any way to combine these modalities with raw foodism. You could study the vata food tables to see what raw food you might eat, but your diet would be fairly limited and would really run counter to the idea of the vata dosha needing the most cooked foods. I think you'll have to pick one philosophy or the other and see how eating that way makes you feel at this moment in your life...not everyone needs to eat the same at all the different times in their life (I know this is raw food heresy, but then I'm pretty much a diet heretic anyway). Guest guest
I think he also discusses it in his book Rainbow Green. Not sure if he covers it in his newer book, Spiritual Nutrition. Guest guest
Here is something Cousens wrote about the food needs of vata people in Conscious Eating: " Vata people can eat a raw-food diet if they eat heavier, oily foods such as avocado and soaked nuts and seeds, both of which have water to balance their dryness and oil to balance their lightness. Heating herbs helps vatas by giving their raw food the warmth it needs. Since vatas have a tendency to be cold and to get cold, warming up food to 110-118 degrees F in the sun or the stove is an especially good practice for a vata who likes raw foods. Vatas are unbalanced by the dryness of dried fruit but can eat some if they add back the water element by first soaking the fruit. Vatas should eat at regular intervals and not go too long without eating. Blending raw vegetables into a liquid soup form is good for vatas in that it supplies the water element in an easily digestible way while still preserving the enzymes. This blending process and soaking of nuts and seeds helps to minimize the gas that vata people tend to have because of the inherent air quality of their basic constitution. In general, vata people are best maintained in balance with soupy, oily, salty, and warm foods. This is particularly true for those vatas who have been successful on a raw-food diet.
