Jack turned 91 this week. There was an article in our local Sunday paper which

described his diet and fitness routine. Some of it was also in this online

article.

http://www.ediets.com/news/article.cfm/cmi_1445527

The newspaper article was syndicated by Knight-Ridder newspapers and may be

available in other local newspapers. I couldn't find the exact article online.

For the most part he recommends a raw diet of 10 vegetables and 7 fruits daily

along with 30 minutes of daily exercise. He goes beyond this with a few cooked

foods (egg whites and fish) and vitamins, but allows that these are so he can

keep an above-average fitness level for his age. Pretty inspiring guy!

Thanks for sharing this with us Nick. I needed this reminder that consistency on

a simple basic diet and exercise routine can make so much difference, and it

takes both diet and exercise to make the difference. Sometimes I end up focusing

more on the fine tuning than on the consistency of the basics.

Its discouraging to see how many health gurus die prematurely of degenerative

illnesses. Turning 91 is doing pretty good and says a lot.

I remember my mom watching his exercise program a long time ago so I have a

pretty good picture of him in my head. I thought he was a bit too over

enthusiastic, structured, and simplistic. However, the little voice in the back

of my head is saying Right Now " Gosh Rog, he's lasted longer than a lot of the

other health gurus, maybe, just maybe, it would be good to take a second look at

really consistently sticking to the basics and including exercise with the

basics. "

I'll probably still skip the jumping jacks in favor of brisk walks and Qi Gong -

a lot of those Chinese health teachers have also lived a very long time :)

May your life be filled with clarity, grace, progress, and warm laughter,

Roger

I saw a special about Jack a while back and he said he exercises 2 - 3 hours

a day! Swimming, aerobic, weight training and stretching. So 30 minutes is

a drop in the smoothie for him. He's trying to reach the couch potatoes!!

Helen,

Check this link. I just googled " Jack Lalanne " (this is the correct

spelling, I spelled it wrong before)

http://www.shareguide.com/LaLanne.html

The Knight-Ridder article also had a current picture (b/w).
