Organic Cara Cara Navel oranges, brix around 14 (pretty good comparing

to regular navel oranges, brix around 10), sweet and delicious. They are

2.99/lb.

Non-organic heirloom navel oranges, brix 16-19 (good to excellent). They

are on special for 1.49/lb.

I boungt tons of valencias two (or three) years ago. I haven't been

eating much oranges for the past two years because there wasn't any good

ones. Valencias seem to have disappeared due to weather I suppose. Those

navels I checked periodically brixed around 10.

I have been saying that brix is not sugar level. Here is a good example.

The Cara Caras are apparantly sweeter than the heirloom navels but these

heirloom navels brix unusually high. They are not particularly sweet.

They are sort of tart but have a rich flavor. The Cara Caras are

delightfully sweet, a very enjoyable treat.

I forgot to mention that the heirloom navel oranges in Whole Food Market

are from Ripetoyou. They are not organic but according to their website

these people practice sustainable farming and use very little chemicals.

They don't pick their oranges until the fruits are fully ripe.

That is great info, Helen. Thank you! I don't know who the grower is

for the organic Cara Caras at PCC but they are also exceptionally good

(better than the ones I've tried at Whole Foods, Central Market and Top

Foods). I had also given up on Valencias earlier this year but they are

back at PCC and they are very good -- ripe, juicy and flavorful.

I don't know who are the growers of the Cara Cara in Whole Foods. The

sticker says " Tule specialty packers " with product #93110. I'll check

out those in PCC. I'd imagine they all come from same place.
