Guest guest
Hi I just found this board. I am brand new at this and sure this has been asked before but I need any input on blenders you have. I bought the vitamix 5000 and it arrived today. Have not even used it yet. It doesn't fit under the counter while it sits on the base. (20 " high) I considered the Ktec total blender which is much shorter (15 " and would fit under the counter). Can you tell me if they are equal quality and which one is better and will last the longest. I believe I have 30 days to return the vitamix if needed. I want to make great foods for my kids. Nut butters, vegetable soups, and grind hard wheat alot in it as I make homemade breads. I will be a hard consistent home user. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Don
Guest guest
Hi Don, I can speak on this. I am happy with the K-tec because a new one has an 8 year warranty. They are also easier to clean than the Vita-mix. When I had roomates (and my blender got a lot of heavy usage,) i used to have the carafe replaced from time to time. The company is really good about up-keep. Since only I use it myself, I haven't had any need to send parts back and am quite happy with it. On the other hand, I love the variable speed dial on a Vita-mix and the handy tool some of them have that looks like a plunger. Guest guest
Hi Don, I have experience with both. In my opinion the KTec is far superior to the VitaMix. Even though it is a bit noisy, I love the ease of cleaning, the shape, and the quality of the food my beautiful machine produces. Guest guest
I second Don's question and would add one of my own: Are any of the power blenders less noisy than the others? The extreme noise factor is what's kept me from getting one. Yes, I can wear noise-cancelling headphones, but I can't help but think that the intense sound waves are impacting on the whole body of anyone standing near the blender. Who knows what effect they could be having? Guest guest
I bought a K-tec in part because of the shape - the carafe seems a lot easier to work with than the tall, skinny vitamix type. It also has a zillion preprogrammed cycles, which is useful. I somehow screwed up my order and got a white one - I wanted black. For something that gets used 24 seconds every other day or so, noise level really isn't an issue for me. > Hi > > I just found this board. > > I am brand new at this and sure this has been asked before but I need > any input on blenders you have. > > I bought the vitamix 5000 and it arrived today. Guest guest
Hi Don, I have both blenders. They are both heavy duty and will last a long time. I believe both have a lengthy warranty. K-tec acknowledges that they have a problem with the bearings on the containers. They wear out. However, if you return the container they will replace it. But that takes a few weeks. The Green machine juicer will homogenize nuts etc. but if you want to make a cheesecake with a thick creamy nut filling or a thick sauce, you need a good blender. I prefer the Vitamix as it allows more control with the variable speed. There is technique to blending. If you start at a high speed with thick ingredients, it will overheat. The K-tec is preprogrammed with a choice of cycles. It is great for making nut mylks, grinding flax seed or making soups. But I'll take the Vitamix for anything thick. The tamper which comes with the Vitamix allows one to mix the food, if necessary, as it is blending, which helps the process and helps to avoid overheating of the blender. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi Don, I use my Vitamix twice a day for making smoothies and it's been great and easy to clean -- BUT I just read a disturbing article about plastics in Co-op America's RealMoney newsletter (Jan/Feb 06). It says: " Bishpenol-A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that is used in making polycarbonates and can leach from them when they're used. A recent review of studies regarding BPA's effects (Environmental Health Perspectives, August 2005) finds that more than 80% of published studies assessing the effects of low-dose BPA exposure on laboratory animals found significant effects, including alterations to brain chemistry and structure, behavior, the immune system, and male and female reproductive systems. " When I look at the inside of my Vitamix container and see how scratched and worn it is I have to wonder if all those miniscule bits of polycarbonate getting into my food are such a good thing. I think I'll look for a glass or metal alternative. If anyone knows of one please let me know. Thanks, Gael
Guest guest
Hi Don, I have a k-tec and am very happy with it. It is more compact than the vitamix and is much easier to clean. The only two downfalls are the noise factor and the fact that it doesn't have a plunger like the vitamix which sometimes requires adding more liquid than you want in recipes. Our household combined uses the ktec at least 6 times a day which is pretty high use and I have had no problems in 2.5 years (knock on wood). I think you would be fine with either though the vitamix would be easier on the kids' ears if you are going to use it often - certainly something to consider. I recently started wearing ear protectors because of the constact ktec ringing in my ears; being the reason i'm about to buy a vitamix to use for my smoothies and ice cream. One more thing... the ktec is better at powdering nuts/seeds and so would probably be the better option for grinding your wheat berries. Guest guest
Hi All, Has anyone tried the Waring model that has a 1 hp motor and a stainless steel container? It's in the same price range as the Vitamix and I'm wondering how it compares. Best, Gael
