Guest guest
Hi Helen, Which store is it that will open the durian before selling it? I've gotten bad ones and just had to 'eat' my $40 investment. Recently I discovered fresh durian at a store called " TNT " in Surrey, which is a lot easier to get to than downtown Vancouver, for only $3.99 per pound (it was on sale, regularly $4.99). Thanks for the info, Helen. Nora - Helen RawSeattle Thursday, June 29, 2006 6:14 PM [RawSeattle] yummy fresh durians in Vancouver I went to Vancouver last Friday to participate in the World Peace Forum (parade, concerts and seminars, etc) that was taking place in Vancouver from June 23-28. I stayed with my friend at her apartment. She got a fresh durian for me and it was yummy! They opened the durian at the store so you can see if it's a good one before you buy it. She also got me raw lotus seeds and lily roots which she said were quick freezed from China. I like them both. The lily roots were sweet and crunchy. I wish I had time to go to the market to look for sapotes and the other goodies. Helen BTW, Kucinach was at the World Peace Forum.

Guest guest
Hi Audrey, Surrey is southeast of Vancouver, closer to the border. TNT is a chain of large Asian grocery stores like Uwajimaya. I had their number somewhere but seem to have misplaced it. Guest guest
Hi Nora. I called up friend and finally got in touch with her. She told me that all the stores in China town provide the service so that you'll get a garanteed good durian and besides, most people don't like to deal with the hard, spiky shell of durians (think about people living in apartments). When they open the durian, if you see the flesh in dark, greyish color you can refuse to buy it. This is the way the Chinese stores sell their product. I remember seeing the same service in Singapore. It's not a discrminination that they didn't provide the service to you. It's only that you didn't ask for the service. For a fresh durian you have to ask the store to choose a good ripe one for you and then ask them to open for you. People in the store are experienced. They know when the durians are ripe by the look, touch and smell. If you choose the durian yourself then you are responsible for it. My friend Elaine grew up in Saigon and has been eating durians for decades. She says a good durian has a nice strong aroma, the golden color flesh is soft and smooth. If you see water in it then it's not good. She says Golden Pillow is the best with its thick flesh and small pits. Guest guest
Nora, My friend called me again and gave me the addresses of two stores she recommends: Man Cheong 250 E Pender St. 234 E Keefer St. (This store has no English name) She highly recommends Man Cheong for the good quality and variety of their produce. She mentioned custard apple/sugar apple (like cherimoya) from Austrailia, mangosteen, dragon fruit, rambutan and Jackfruit. There is also a type of fruit from Taiwan which I don't know how to say it in English. It's Lien-Wu in Mandarin. I believe there are sapotes too but I don't know how to say sapote in Chinese. Guest guest
Hi Helen, Thanks for the info. I frequent Chinatown in Van pretty often but didn't know about asking to open a durian before buying. I guess it only works if you're planning to eat it right away. The bad one I had to 'eat' was picked out by a friend and brought across the border. Now that I've discovered TNT I'll probably go there mostly but I will definitely ask to see if they have the same policy. Golden Pillow sounds fabulous! Maybe that's the kind I had a couple months ago in Surrey (we took them to the beach in White Rock to eat them, what a heavenly treat), because it was absolutely spectacular, some of the best I've ever eaten. Thanks again! Nora - Helen RawSeattle Friday, June 30, 2006 4:08 PM Re: [RawSeattle] yummy fresh durians in Vancouver Hi Nora. I called up friend and finally got in touch with her.
