Guest guest
Hi there! I have only in the last two months gone from the SAD to trying to go raw but to be honest, I'm really struggling with it. I was wondering if there were some tips people might have to help with the transition. A couple of my challenges: 1. I long for warm foods and drinks... how do you stay warm with raw foods. 2. Lack of knowledge / equipment (is there only one or two comprehensive resources?) Thanks for your understanding and any help you might be able to give. Guest guest
Hi Stephanie, Good for you for making the commitment to give your body what it really wants/needs. There is a book out called Warming Up To Raw Foods by Elysa Markowitz that tells you how to make warm dishes with your dehydrator and blender (you'd be surprised how hot 115 degree soup is). There are also a lot of warming spices and foods such as cayenne, ginger, mustard, peppers etc that will make a cold dish taste hot. Also, know that in your first year of being raw, while your body is transitioning and detoxing, you might be a little colder than you were before but that will change. I'm a mountain climber, and I've talked to another (long time) raw climber, and we both feel that we are warmer now than before when we climb. As far as knowledge, there are literally hundreds of books out there to help you in your transition. And as far as equipment goes, buy what you can as you can afford it. I think the most versatile kitchen tool is probably the blender (I like the Vita-Mix) then probably a dehydrator or food processor next. Possibly the best help in transitioning, though, is to hang out/around other like minded people at raw events. We host a raw pot luck in Redmond the first Sat of every month, rawseattle.org lists events each month, and .org lists raw support meetings (great for new raw people) as well as other raw events. FYI, This Sat is our monthly pot luck in Redmond. We'll be showing the movie Eating which is a great movie for people transitioning to raw. We also have a raw store at our place that you could check out that evening - we stock over 250 raw products, including over 60 book titles and many popular brands of kitchen equipment - all at 10% - 40% off retail. Hope that helps, Tom _____ RawSeattle [RawSeattle ] On Behalf Of Stephanie Wednesday, November 29, 2006 10:24 PM RawSeattle [RawSeattle] Transition from SAD to RAW Hi there! Guest guest
Hi Stephanie, You will probably have to wade through some information to figure out who resonates with you as a teacher what type of raw diet fits for you at this time. Very helpful and influential resources for me were/are: Nora Lenz's web site at www.rawschool.com Doug Graham's cds/dvds at www.foodnsport.com Frederic Patenaude's articles at www.fredericpatenaude.com Equipment: I'm not that into the gourmet raw recipes, but I do love my smoothies (bananas, berries or mangoes, some lettuce), soups (mostly fruit soups), and sauces (applesauce w/dates, etc.). I got along w/my Oster blender and Cuisinart food processer fine for a couple yrs. and would've continued to, but I got a Vita-mix for my birthday and that does make frozen food easier to blend. As far as staying warm, I'm still working on that here in Seattle. Some tips: --Staying warm is easier than trying to get warm after you've gotten cold. --Drink warm water. --Wear long underwear, etc., even inside. --Eat a lot of yummy, room temp. fruit instead of cold or frozen fruits and veggies. Let your lettuce, veggies, etc., sit out at room temp. to warm up before eating (instead of straight from the frig). Guest guest
When I get cold, I like to take a hot shower or lay in the sauna in my apartment building. There is a lot of raw resources on the web. Check out the " Links " section listed on the left (if you are viewing via the web site) for some of them.
