Guest guest
Hi Ron, This is a very interesting suggestion. I hadn't thought of concentrating the sun's energy for drying food in the context of my raw food diet. As soon as I saw this, I remembered another piece of simple technology that would be very useful in ensuring that while the food dried quicker, it would still be raw. It is a temperature activated device for opening a ventilation window in a greenhouse to keep the greenhouse from overheating. The device doesn't use any electricity, is self-contained, and is mechanically activated when it reaches the temperature it is set for. Since the range of temperatures which are too hot for plants is similar to the maximum drying temperatures for raw food, these devices could be adapted for controlling the maximum temperature for enclosed raw food driers. This would be very useful for the solar cookers which are enclosed boxes for opening one pane of the glazing on the top to prevent the cooker from overheating and cooking the food as it dries. When one pane is opened even a little bit due to excess heat, this would help create a draft in the food drier, and this air movement would help accelerate food drying. An additional advantage of this approach is that it would help protect the food from rain showers and damp nights because the ventilation window would automatically close as soon as it cooled off due to reduced sunlight. May your day be filled with clarity, grace, progress, and warm laughter, Roger - " Ron Koenig " <theveganking <RawSeattle > Tuesday, December 12, 2006 6:50 PM [RawSeattle] Solar Cookers > I found a web page with information about building solar cookers. Guest guest
It's going to be fascinating to see the products and cottage industries that emerge to serve the raw/living foods community, as our numbers inevitably grow. > It is a temperature activated device for opening a ventilation window in a greenhouse to keep the greenhouse from overheating. Will love to see an application such as you describe. > When one pane is opened even a little bit due to excess heat, this would help create a draft in the food drier, and this air movement would help accelerate food drying. I can see one of these attached to the rail of a sailboat. Not sure if any dehydrating could be done when its actually raining or extremely humid outside (is there such a thing as a " moisture filter " that could be effective?), but perhaps it could still be used for warming foods up.
