Guest guest
Hello all, I am wondering if there is anyone that can tell me the names and locations of the Raw Restaraunts in San Fransisco. More south of the city the better and any stores that carry raw products. I have a friend in " Sunnyvale " that wants to go more raw . Especially looking for " Cacao " deserts and snacks/chocolates, get her off the adulterated cooked chocolate bars. Thanks Catherine
Guest guest
I usually stay try to stay at Hotel California when I'm in the South Bay area, the rooms are quaint, a little small, but the price is right. Nearly accross the street, you'll find: http://www.countrysun.com Not as big as PCC, but not bad either - they have numerous raw products last time I was there. There is also a Whole Foods in Palo Alto. Caltran runs from Sunnyvale to California Ave, and the Palo Alto station is next. A trip to town on Caltran from Sunnyvale will get you close enough for a cab ride to: http://www.withthecurrent.com/cafe.html I do miss the original " Raw " on LIncoln St downtown - I went there back in around 1996 or so, and it was quite good. I bet there are other raw places in San Fran area - these are the couple I have found during my (mostly) short work travels to Silicon (ugh) Valley. The new(er) Bullet express trains run very fast - one can get from Sunnyvale to downtown in about 48 minutes or less now, iirc, and the prices are good, much less than renting a car or taking cabs. Guest guest
Hi Catherine, Alive! Café (1972 Lombard) was my favorite S.F. raw restaurant. A little more intimate (especially in summer with the out door patio out back) and the most gourmet of the bay area raw restaurants. They’re also at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays where I had some of the best raw pizza as well as raw chocolate pie ever! Café Gratitude (1336 9th Ave,Sunset district: 2400 Harrison St, Mission district: 1730 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley – the best of the 3 in ambiance; and as of 2 weeks ago, 2200 4th St, San Rafael) is the biggest – and best – raw “chain” on the west coast (Leaf Cuisine in LA has 3 restaurants as does Cilantro Live! in San Diego). By far the broadest menu of any raw restaurant I’ve eaten at and borderline gourmet. Will be opening their 5th restaurant in LA this summer. Judahlicious (4500 Judah St) is a funky, mostly raw food & juice bar in the Sunset district. Café Solstice (4 E 4th Ave, San Mateo, Elaina Love’s new raw restaurant in the Equinox Gym) is great for snacks and desserts. Que Se Raw, Se Raw (1160 Capuchino Ave, Burlingame) is a raw take out restaurant that also supplies take out food to local markets. Café Muse (2625 Durant Ave, Berkeley) is a 1/3 raw “cafeteria style” restaurant in the UC Berkeley Art Museum. Juicy Lucy’s (703 Columbus) is a juice bar selling salads as well. Millenium (580 Geary St, SF, upscale) and Raw Energy Organic Juice and Café (2050 Addison, Berkeley) both offer one raw entrée. I ate at all of these (except Millenium and the San Rafael Café Gratitude which wasn’t open yet) last month as part of my 13 day, 40 raw restaurants, “raw research road trip” for NW Living Foods (the raw store in Redmond) and have listed them in my order of preference. I hope to have a link on the store website (www.nw.livingfoods.com <http://www.nw.livingfoods.com/> ) soon listing/rating all 40 west coast raw/mostly raw restaurants as well as the few raw/raw friendly stores/markets that do exist (Erewhon in LA is the only store on the West coast with more raw product than NW Living Foods). As far as stores/markets go, the bay area was pretty disappointing (compared to LA at least). Rainbow Market (1745 Folsom, S.F.), although meat free, had only one small end cap dedicated to raw food though they had more spread throughout the store if you’re willing to search. Berkeley Bowl, although boasting one of the biggest produce sections I’ve ever seen, had very little raw. Hope that helps.
