This was only a short term (1 year) study and only compared 4 diets - NONE of which are a well balanced raw vegan diet, which I think is by far the healthiest. How can a study say a particular diet is best when all the diets examined are unhealthy, and healthy diets are excluded? That's like asking someone who they think the best candidate for an election is - the Democrat or Republican - while ignoring the Green and Libertarian candidates who have all the best ideas. This study is doing a disservice to the public. Now many people are going to read this and think that it's healthy to eat a high meat, low carb diet. Guest guest
Yep, Unless you're sponsoring the study to get people to eat more animal products. As I said earlier, you can get good information from almost any study if you are clear on the purpose and research that were behind it. OK, maybe this one is an exception ;-) Nick Hein Morgantown, WV - Josh Wednesday, March 07, 2007 3:26 PM Atkins Is Best Diet Around, Says Stanford University Study I think Standford is an excellent university, so it's surprising to see this headline is a front page news today. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/healthnews.php?newsid=64716 Another flawed study. Guest guest
I took a peak at this and noticed that they took unhealthy people and found out this diet helped them the most of the diets they chose to test. How you can interpret that as meaning this diet is the " best diet around " is very illogical! There's a saying in the accounting world that's appropriate here: " Figures don't liar, but liars can figure. Guest guest
To come to the defense of the person that said what you wrote below.... Ron...Obviously you just " Took a peak " at the article becuase in line one it states; " According to a study of 311 women carried out by researchers at Stanford University, USA, the Atkins diet is the best one around. " Maybe before you make statements about lying, you should read the article more carefully. Guest guest
I wasn't calling them liars. I was using a figure of speech that applies when someone tells facts in such a way as to mislead people into thinking something that is not true. For example, if three people competed against each other, someone would come in first, someone second, and someone third. The person who came in third could describe the person who came in second as the one who came in second from the last, while boasting that he came in third from the top. He is not lying, but gives the impression that he did better than the person who came in second (because of false assumptions assumed from his statement). Now, if the title was " The Atkins Diet was the best of four diets chosen in order to help women lose weight " it would be more truthful. There are many different reasons for going on a diet. Diabetics have to adjust their sugar intake in their diet. People who have had heart attacks are advised to lower their fat intake to avoid another heart attack. To make the blanket statement that the Atkins Diet is the best diet around, does not take into account what a person's dietary needs are, nor can it be true, because there is such a variety of diets that were not tested. And because each individual's needs are different, what is best for one person would not be best for another. And I considered the women not healthy because they were all overweight. If someone's health improves on the Atkins diet, I doubt they were eating very healthfully to begin with, and thus, could not be healthy. Again, we have to define what healthy is. Just because you don't have a terminal disease and can function throughout the day, it doesn't mean you are healthy. I'm sorry if I conveyed a wrong impression with my post. I hope this clears it up.
