Guest guest
Anyone had any experience with an elderly person going raw? My 83 year old mom lives with us and eats a terrible diet and is about 50 lbs overweight. She would never try going raw but since she's suffered a third time with gout, more painful than ever, I challenged her to try raw for 30 days if I provide the food for her. She's on the third day and of course, experiencing the unpleasant cleanse. Her feet are much better and her blood pressure is pretty good for her. I'm thinking it can't hurt but I haven't read anything about the elderly. I've been mostly raw for only a year so I'm not an expert. Guest guest
Joan, I think I remember reading tart cherries/juice is good for gout. Double check me on google but I recently looked and was right if my memory serves me . The only thing with an elderly person I would worry about is detoxing to fast and the adverse effects could be debilitating , if so I would slow down. And make sure they are having good bowel movements:) to eliminate the toxins...plenty of water Catherine - Joan, Tomboy Tools Consultant Wednesday, March 14, 2007 11:40 PM Raw Food Diet & The Elderly Anyone had any experience with an elderly person going raw? Guest guest
Hi Joan! My grandmother did the Hallelujah Diet (85%+ raw) several years ago. My Uncle and Aunt who introduced me took her in (which would be her son) for several years. The tranformation was amazing. She was in her late 70's or early 80's when she started and she must have lost at least 75 pounds. She look great and got around a ton better. The rub is that my Uncle and Aunt wanted to move but she wanted to stay with her church so they moved her into an assisted living situation and guess what... within a couple years she died and weighed probably as much or more than she ever did because the home fed the SAD. We also have several folks in their 70's & 80's that come to our Tues food prep and they are like teenagers running around all their friends. They are funny though, they don't treat their friends all nice like we do, they tell 'em like it is and boy do they get some dander up! Guest guest
I did get her cherry supplements and concentrated cherry juice in a bottle to add to her smoothies. Her gout is way better and her blood pressure is lower. But this morning she tells me that she's done with raw food because she doesn't like feeling weak and having to go to the bathroom so much. I told her that was to be expected and had warned her when we started this. But I guess she'd rather suffer with gout than a few days of discomfort. You can lead a horse to water...
