MedicineNet is one on the most accessed health sites on the Internet. When the subject is Rectal Bleeding, MedicineNet lists eight major causes: 1) Anal fissure 2) Hemorrhoids 3) Diverticulosis 4) Colon cancer and polyps 5) Polypectomy 6) Angiodysplasias 7) Colitis and proctitis

8) Meckel's diverticulum After being compromised by one or more incidences of rectal bleeding, a patients first response would be to fear the worst. After thousands of dollars of undignified tests, quite often none of the above eight "causes" is diagnosed. Doctors rarely if ever consider that diet may play a significant role in rectal bleeding. The January, 2009 issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology (2009 Jan;7(1):120-2) addresses hypersensitivity to foods as a cause of rectal bleeding. Scientists at the University of Palermo (Carroccio, et. al.) demonstrated that hypersensitivity to dairy and/or wheat products was the cause of rectal bleeding in fifteen percent of their patients. Remarkably, after the offending food was removed from their diets (using a double-blind placebo-controlled experiment) the bleeding ended. After the food was re-introduced,

the bleeding returned between 1 and 96 hours. The researchers concluded: "Recurrent rectal bleeding can be caused by food hypersensitivity in adult patients."
