We’re in Essence Magazine, Again!

Posted: 27 Apr 2009 11:54 AM PDT

Blackvegetarians.org, the web site I started with my sister a decade ago, is mentioned in Essence magazine, again! This time we’re in the May 2009 issue, with First Lady Michelle Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson, on the cover. This is Essence’s first “green guide†issue and blackvegetarians.org is featured as a resource for meatless meals. We couldn’t be more thrilled! We started the web site to support and inspire African American vegetarians, of which there are an estimated 1.5 million-plus. And as it turns out, our web site was the first of its kind. Today there are scores of web sites, blogs, e-groups, and veg groups throughout the country catering to African American vegetarians. We’re proud to be a part of a long line of folks eating veg and inspiring others to do the same for more vibrant health, a greener planet, compassion for animals, deeper spirituality, and other

reasons. Check out our healthy and delicious recipes at blackvegetarians.org.

Welcome Back

Posted: 06 Aug 2009 10:38 PM PDT

It’s been a good little while since I last blogged, so here’s an update. I spent the past few months holed up in a little room in my house called my office feverishly writing my By Any Greens Necessary book to meet my July 1st deadline (which magically became July 8th, thanks to my fairy godmother of an agent, Audra Barrett).

So, I am THRILLED to report that my manuscript–all 200 and something pages of it–is now in the hands of my publisher, Chicago Review Press, and we expect it to be in your hands by Spring 2010! You can read more about the book here.

Now I’m all about the business of making this baby a bestseller when it comes out. If you personally know any famous sisters who can endorse my book, like, um… Michelle Obama or Oprah, hook me up!

In the meantime, I’m also working hard as the program director for the Vegetarian Society of DC’s Eat Smart nutrition program starting in September. It’s the nation’s first community-based, vegan nutrition program launched with federal funding. Our goal is to help DC residents get healthier by eating more plant-based foods. If you or someone you know is in the DC area and want to learn more, check us out here.

And… I’m going to be a presenter at this year’s Vegfest in DC in September. It’s our very own free, outdoor veggie festival in the nation’s capital. Read all about it here. I hope to see some of ya’ll there!

That’s it for now. Whew! Talk to you soon.

Kale Salad Recipe & DC VegFest

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 08:16 PM PDT

I had a fabulous time at DC VegFest today! The turnout was tremendous. Thanks to so many of you who came out to see my food demo. I really appreciate the love! As promised, here’s my kale salad recipe. (I posted the fresh peach cobbler recipe a few days ago, so look for it two posts back.) If you were at VegFest today, write a note in the comment section below and let everyone know what you thought!

All Hail the Kale Salad

Ingredients:

2-3 bunches curly kale, chopped or torn into small pieces

1 red onion, chopped

5 cloves of garlic, chopped

3 TB olive oil

2-3 TB Bragg liquid amino

2 TB nutritional yeast

Cayenne pepper to taste

Put kale in bowl and pour on olive oil. Stir with salad tongs to make sure all leaves are coated. Add in rest of ingredients and mix well with tongs. If possible, let marinate at room temperature for about 15-30 minutes before serving. Yields 6-8 servings. Enjoy!

Our Food Demo on NBC News 4

Posted: 10 Oct 2009 07:12 PM PDT

Our food demo at DC VegFest a few weeks ago was featured in a brief NBC 4 News clip about the festival. You can see it here. That’s my mom standing next me, serving as my lovely assistant. We’ll be posting the actual food demo on my blog and youtube shortly. Meanwhile, back at VegFest, I got to meet bodybuilder Kenneth Williams (that’s his picture with this blog). Kenneth was super nice and also happens to be the world’s first vegan bodybuilding champion. You can watch him being interviewed at VegFest here. Several folks that day talked about bringing this kind of vegan/green

festival to Howard University. If you’re interested in working toward this goal, drop me a line. It’s definitely a worthy project.

Help Pick My Book Cover Photo

Posted: 16 Oct 2009 10:44 AM PDT

My publisher and I are trying to decide (um…agree) on the cover photo for my book. So, can you help us choose? We want the image itself to convey the book title, By Any Greens Necessary: A Revolutionary Guide for Black Women Who Want to Get Healthy, Lose Weight, Eat Great, and Look Phat.

You can see the photos at: www.imaginephoto.printroom.com/byanygreensnecessary. There’s a brief slide show with a few pics on the homepage, which is kind of fun. To see all the photos, click â€Tracye Cover Shots (Alone)†on the left side. Pls pick about 3 or 4 photos that you like best, and email me the corresponding numbers.

Pls only choose the pics in which I’m standing up. The sitting ones are for the author photos. Actually, you can help choose the author photo, too, although this one’s easier because we’ve narrowed it down to three: #3393, #3394, or #3396. This will go on the back cover and in the media kits. Feel free to let me know which one you prefer.

And if you’re curious about the family shots of my mother, my niece, and me, we were unanimous on that one: #3335. The ones of my mother by herself were some that the photographer took just for fun. I think my mom looks gorgeous! The photographer agrees–she wants to use her as a model. Go, mom!

The photographer was Kea Taylor. She’s simply excellent. Her web site is www.imaginephotographyonline.com.

Well, that’s it. Thanks so much for your help. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

Kea3399. You should most definitely go with one of you in the red and one with you actually holding some greens. You should not go with you of you holding you mouth too wide open. You like slightly fanatical in those. Hope this helps. They are all beautifuL!E. Rice-Fells <shortydemp Group Sent:

Blacks & Greens: A Healthy Tradition

Posted: 13 Apr 2010 08:24 PM PDT

Here’s an excerpt from my latest nutrition column for Healthy You Now titled “Blacks and Greens: A Tradition of Healthy Eating.â€

In my two decades of being a vegan, I have heard many people refer to this way of eating as a white thing.

In fact, when I was (disastrously) introduced to vegetarianism in the 7th grade, I thought it was something that crazy white people did. It wasn’t until I got to college and heard a lecture by human rights activist and humorist Dick Gregory that I realized this was something that crazy black people did, too.

But that was more than 25 years ago. Times have changed. Today, there is no reason for anyone to still believe that eating healthy is a white thing and, conversely, that eating unhealthy is a black thing. Truth be told, there was actually no reason to believe it then, either.

Why? We have a long and strong tradition of eating healthy, plant-based foods. Even with our past and current health crises, large segments of black folks have been eating well and staying healthy for decades.

Read more to find out how African Americans have pioneered healthy plant-based eating in the U.S. and across the globe.
