Pets and pet food

I heard somewhere, can't remember where, that cats really need meat. There is a

nutrient they can't do without and can't get anywhere else. I don't like the

meat thing either but be sure and do all the research before you put your

precious pet in danger. Dogs might be different but I don't know.

I've always read that cats need an amino acid that is not

found in plant food, but only in animal food. I think the

name of the amino acid is 'taurine', but I " m not sure that I

remember this correctly.

I've read that this is absolutely necessary for them to be

healthy. Cats are called 'obligate carnivores' - they have

no choice. And it's not that easy to feed dogs a healthy

vegetarian diet either, unless you're extremely wealthy and

can afford to buy vegetarian dog food.

Myself, I wouldn't try to feed either dogs or cats a

vegetarian diet. Dogs are wolves, basically, descended from

wolves and they are carnivores. Cats are most certainly

carnivores - our cat knows this very well, she goes outdoors

and kills mice, moles, and various and sundry other innocent

little things.

What's right for *us* isn't necessarily right for *them*.

Well, actually, I'm not a vegetarian myself at the moment

although I have been in the past and may be in the future.

But even when I was a vegetarian, I fed my dogs and cats

regular dog and cat food.

Cheers,

Pat
