Guest guest
I have a question. How many of you consider yourselves to be " animal people " ? I have met more veg folks in animal rescue than anyplace else. OK, now for my rant. NEUTER and SPAY you DOG! I have a new foster who is an intact male, got loose they are guessing a month ago and then got shot in the leg about a week and a half ago. He's 50% under weight, his leg is so infected it is going to be amputated soon and he still might not live. Oh, he has heart worms too. He's the sweetest dog ever, even in all this pain he lets me change his bandage. It just irritates me so bad, testicles are bad for dogs! Arghhhhh! But, the good news is that we're getting the surgeries for free and after a couple months of crate confinement for the heart worms, he should be healed, fat and ready to be adopted. I hope. Now, to get him to eat. He did eat a piece of the sliced turkey that I got to slip his pills into... I'll buy as much as he'll eat as long as he eats it. Here's a hint, if your dog won't take pills, take a bit of thin sliced meat, put a teaspoon of peanut butter in it, put the pills in that and the wrap it up like a burrito. Make it small enough that they can swollow it all in one piece. The peanut butter keeps them from spitting out the pills and they love the meat... even my super smart, I know there's a pill in there dog will eat those. But, if Gandolf, the foster, isn't hungry, even this won't work. OK, well, I'm eating some frozen stirfry right now and then I have to teach lab. Love on your fur kids... Guest guest
Good for you for fostering! I adopted a basset four months ago. She's the sweetest thing! I crated her for awhile but it didn't work. She pees all over my furniture. So we just recently built a fence in our backyard just for her and she enjoys it (we have a very big backyard). We bring her in our garage at night...There is a full size mattress and boxspring with sheets out there for her to sleep on and we just use our driveway to park our car. She's spoiled even if she doesn't get to live inside. She's still very skinny but she's slowly gaining some weight. She had spent a long time in the shelter before rescued. Guest guest
> I have a question. How many of you consider yourselves to be " animal people " ? I am -- right now have 4 parrots and 3 dogs -- have done both dog and bird rescue. Used to have a horse. > He's 50% under weight, his leg is so infected it is going to be amputated soon and he still might not live. I had an elderly Italian doctor. He told me when he was 12 he fell and cut his thigh seriously. It got infected. His parents consulted with every doctor they could. Nobody could save his leg. He was scheduled for an amputation on Monday. On Saturday his governess (guess they had money) asked his parents if she could try something and they said yes, try anything! She picked plantain (common weed) leaves and mashed them up with mortar and pestle. She packed them on his leg. On Monday when his parents took him in for an amputation his leg was healing, and they did not amputate after all. Ya never know. I've also used comfrey leaves as a poultice to draw infection from a wound... and also used fresh, chilled onion slices to draw infection. Cooked brown rice, garlic, and fresh tomato slices are also reputed to draw. Call your local health food store and ask for advice. Don't give up without a fight! Also, give this dog frozen, then ground up (in blender) sprouts in his meals. Mix the sprouts with garlic and ground up raw liver. The nutrition will do him a world of good. I'd be talking to everyone to get ideas. Post to the list " Wellpet " and they'll give you the best ideas. My dogs will take any pill I wrap in Oscar Meyer Braunschweiger! Good luck with the dog, and bless you both, Genie! Melinda
Guest guest
I completely consider myself an animal person. Most of the animals that come into our home are adopted or rescued in some way. Usually, we kind of play foster home until they find a more suitable, permanent home. I just feel bad for homeless critters, so I take them in. Then I find the perfect home for them -- if I can't keep them for whatever reason. I have three dogs right now. The oldest, my grandparents got for me from a pet store when I was 12. Cassie is 13 1/2 now. The middle dog, I adopted from the pound about a year ago. Skeeter is about 6 yrs old. The youngest we just took in off the street a few weeks ago. She'd been roaming around town. The humane society and I figure she's been dumped. She was very skinny and shy at first. I figure she's about 1 or 2. They're all female. They're all beagles. My two oldest are spayed. The youngest I'm not sure of. I've got an appointment at the vet next week. Hopefully he can find out without opening her up. I've known of a few humans whose testicles got them in trouble.

Guest guest
LOL! But you're probably not going to have much luck with a neutering campaign for them!
