Guest guest
I feel your pain! Just think of all the money you can save by not eating out...Not to mention being control of everything that goes into your stomach. Chili's used to be one of my favorite family spots to eat back when I was a carnivore. Now it is HORRIBLE...I didn't realize it at the time but there are NO veggie meals on the menu, which is strange really. I can't stand shrooms so I never order that quesodilla...Though I did once thinking I could pick out the mushrooms, but it was loaded with them. They should have called it a mushroom quesodilla instead. Their southwestern vegetable soup is vegan though...They use vegetable broth (so I was told). So you could always have that with a dinner salad and garlic toast. I ate at a Chinese rest last night that was wonderful. As soon as I asked whether or not one particular dish was vegetarian, the waitress gave a long list of what weren't b/c of chicken broth. Any other place would have said yes b/c there was no meat in it. Anyway, I couldn't eat any of the noodle dishes or the soups. I had a veggie Moo Goo Gai Pan with tofu and extra veggies...It was so AWESOME. Guest guest
Chilis does not offer a lot, but I do love that veggie quesodillia! I often get a craving for it. My husband and I will often go and split that with a house salad each and its the perfect amount for lunch. And at less than $12.00, that beats fast food anyday! I am often surprised myself that more places don't offer more vegetarian entrees, but my sister (Who is 13 years older than me) often reminds me " I should have been a vegetarian in the 70s! It was h-e-double LL! " LOLOL I have also found that a lot of places are becoming more receptive to fixing things special. (When the cook is having a good day!) I was going to a meditation retreat last Saturday and stopped at Sonic to get a drink. I was starved but NOTHING on their breakfast menu was without meat. I just happend to ask if they could fix the burrito wrap, which normally is eggs, cheese and sausgage, without the sausage and she did not have probllem with that at all. (Although some people act as if you just asked for their first born and blood...again, its just depending!) With kindness, beth " kate. Guest guest
i didn't think that there were shrooms in them, or anything in mushroom form. my palate isn't that well cultivated. anyway, for those type of restaurants i think that chili's does put the effort out in somewhat catering to vegetarians. places like friday's totally got rid of any semblance of a vegetarian menu that they have. their broken noodles were da bomb, but now all i have to choose is a gardenburger. ruby tuesday's has the best veggie burgers ever. but the thing is, these places were established to cater to a meat-eating public. while they make some effort, they don't care if you eat. sad but true. kate : : Allison Nations [allyanne2001] : Sunday, November 10, 2002 12:27 PM : : RE: Restaurant Rant/Chili's : : : I think she meant that there are mushrooms IN the bean : burgers. Many veggie burgers use mushrooms as " bulk " . They may not be visible, but they're often ground up in there. I don't have many food allergies, but the ones i have are severe, which also limits my choices when i go to restaurants. The combination of no meat, nothing " green/molded " and no 'shrooms makes things pretty difficult. So, tonite i'm going to eat at home. I'm going to steam some zuccini and summer squash with basil and garlic, and add a tomato right at the end, then splash it all with a touch of basalmic vinegar. I'll have that with brown rice, and even my meat-eating roommate will enjoy it. Eating at home isn't a bad thing, but since i've been so ill and fatigued, i often don't have the energy to cook. I " m only working 4 hrs/day now that the doctor has let me go back to work, but by the time i get home i'm utterly exhausted still. Guest guest
Kate, I can really sympathize! I'm a vegetarian with some food allergies as well. My " magic words " to use in restaurants are " deathly allergic. " If they think you're being picky, they can resent you, but if they think you're going to die on their shift and sue them, they get REALLY cooperative and kind about it! Another thing you can say is " I hate to put anyone out, but I'm on a special diet for medical reasons. Would it be possible for me to speak with the chef, please? " Sometimes I'll just ask if they can steam me whatever veggies they have with some potatoes, and bring me a little grated cheese on the side or whatever -- and the chef generally seems to appreciate the challenge, as I've gotten some really yummy plates of veggies brought out that way. Another standby is plain mashed potatoes, with a little cheese on the side, if you eat it, or at least butter/margerine/chives. Rice can be really tricky, as they often put chicken broth in it. Soups are almost impossible to buy ready- made anywhere, IMHE. > Eating at home isn't a bad thing, but since i've been so ill and > fatigued, i often don't have the energy to cook. Sherry dear, why are you ill? I don't mean to pry... For breakfast, this morning, I put in the blender: 1/2 c. fresh homemade wheat sprouts (inexpensive and fabulous nutrition!) 1 t. Green Magma 2 handfulls frozen blueberries (I froze 'em this summer -- but frozen berries are cheaper than a coronary bypass - <G>) About 3/4 cup raw goats milk yogurt a little water Whirred the heck out of it and it was YUMMY! Gave me lots of nutrition and energy. I'm thinking a few meals like this might be just what the doctor ordered? Eat your sprouts, honey! Hope you feel better soon! Guest guest
A few years ago, TGIFriday's use to have a couple of vegetarian dishes and even 1 vegan dish. I had a great experience, because my waitress was vegan. Boy she sure was trying to push that vegan dish on me, but I settled for the vegetarian burger. It sure was refreshing to have a vegetarian or vegan server. TGIFridays actually used to be a good restaurant back in the 80's. I would always get their brie cheese for an appetizer and huge shrimp for an entree. Cheers, Shawn " If, at first, you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment. " > " kate. " *chuckle* My husband used to dramatize things like that when we went out to eat, if i asked that mushrooms or cheeses like gorgonzola be left off of things. It always embarassed me! I try to downplay the seriousness of it, though i could in fact die from them. It does work to scare them like that though. > Sherry dear, why are you ill? I don't mean to pry... Its ok...I " ve talked about it here, since this list first started. The doctors have never really figured out WHY i'm sick. All they know is that my autoimmune system is going crazy. I have generalized systemic inflammation (which basically means everything inside me is swelling....joints, muscles, organs, even my brain). They finally gave up trying to figure out why its happening, and started treating the symptoms. I'm taking low doses of steroids for the next 6 months to a year. The side effects are NOT pleasant (bloating, violent mood swings, innsomnia, HUGE appetite), but they really seem to be helping. About 3 days after i started taking them i woke up feeling more like myself than i have in months. The trade off seems worth it, since i was so very very ill for awhile. I was sleeping 18 - 20 hours at the peak of the problems, and even something as simple as taking a shower utterly exhausted me to the point that i had to have a 2 - 3 hr nap afterwards. I couldn't even force myself to eat or drink for awhile. Now i'm back to work 4 hrs/day (after being off for 9 weeks), and hoping the doctor approves a little more when i see him tomorrow. I have an appetite again, and while i'm still easily tired, i have a LOT more energy than i've had for months. Things are definitely improving. You might all wish I'd go back to being sick before long; as you can see, when i have some energy to spare i write LONG posts. *grin* Btw...thank you so much to those of you who sent me e-cards, and good wishes when i was so sick. Your good thoughts really did help more than you know. The kindness of strangers, hm? *smile* -- Sherri Freedom defined is freedom denied. And done blood tests for it (which aren't conclusive, only indicative)? The short-term treatment would be steroids, as you are taking now. In any case, I'm glad you're better. Guest guest
Oh, Sherri, I'm so sorry to read this. I hope they can get on top of what's ailing you. Have you tried eating more raw foods and lots of sprouts? I'm reading such good things about it -- if you can tolerate it, it may help. I'm sending prayers and healing light your way, and I'm glad to read that you're doing better. Melinda
