Guest guest
Does anyone here have a good recipe for hush puppies? You know those little fried, semi-spicey dumpling balls usually served with fish and chips? If you do, I would love to have it. I don't eat fish, but I love tartar sauce and have a really good recipe for that. I like to dip my fries (chips) in that over ketchup any day. *lol* ~ P_T ~ The way to love anything is to realize that it might be lost. ~ G.K. Guest guest
JUST had to comment on your subject! I adopted my second basset hound today...He is a huge male, tri colored beauty that we named, Henry. My 4 year old son Patrick named him and my hubby got a kick out of it because he's teaching about Patrick Henry in his History class at the moment and found that appropriate:) Anyway, I just love my new basset...My new hush puppy. Look on the back of corn meal bags...There are usually hush puppy recipes there! And I know what you mean about tartar sauce! Back when I was a carnivore...The only reason I ever ordered fried catfish was to eat the tartar and fries:) Warmly, Allison --- ~ P_T ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > Does anyone here have a good recipe for hush > puppies? Guest guest
I've got three beagles. Cassie, 13 1/2 yrs old, was given to me by my grandparents when she was about 8 weeks old and I was 12. We adopted Skeeter, 6 yrs old, about a year ago. Dixie came to us just a few weeks ago. She was a stray that was roaming around town. I'm not sure how old she is yet. Haven't gotten her into the vet yet. All three are females. Guest guest
I hear beagles live a long time. A friend of ours had a beagle for 17 years. Bassets only live to be about 10-12:( Your babies sound great! Warmly, Allison --- Janice White <j_m_white wrote: > I've got three beagles. Guest guest
Wow! Congratulation on the new family member. Those kinds of hush puppies are the sweetest. You said " huge male " , so does this mean he is not a pup? Also, I never thought to look on a box of cornmeal or bag or what have you. I usually buy my cornmeal in bulk bins, but what you suggest makes sense. Next time I am shopping I will read a few packages for a recipe. Thanks. I am still working out that tartar sauce recipe. When I get it so I like it best I will post it. *s* ~ P_T ~ Without darkness there are no dreams. -Karla Kuban, novelist ~~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~ , Allison Nations <allyanne2001> wrote: > JUST had to comment on your subject! Guest guest
Thanks Shawn. I guess quaker cornmeal doesn't work for making hush puppies, eh? *lol* The mexican cornbread recipe sounds promising. If when you have a few spare moments you would type it out, that would be lovely, thanks. Guest guest
P_T, here is the regular corn bread recipe with the Mexican addition below it. The 3rd recipe is the Quaker Hush Puppies recipe I found on the net. The last recipe is a vegan hush puppies recipe I found on the net as well. I guess soy milk and egg substitute could make the others vegan too. I like adding jalps for a little kick. Hope it works out for ya. Peace, Shawn. Corn Bread 1/4 cup vegetable shortening or oil 1 cup yellow corn meal 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 to 2 Tablespoons sugar (optional) 1 Tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) 1 cup milk 1 egg, beaten Heat oven to 425F degrees. Heat vegetable shortening in 10-inch oven-proof skillet or 8 or 9-inch square baking pan in oven 3 minutes; tilt skillet to coat bottom evenly. Combine dry ingredients. Add milk and egg; mix until blended. Add melted shortening; mix well. Pour into hot skillet; bake 20 to 25 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. 9 to 10 Servings. Variation: Mexican Corn Bread. Stir one 8-ounce can whole kernel corn, drained, and one 4-ounce can chopped green chilies, drained, into batter. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from oven' top with 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or monterey jack cheese. ---------- Quaker Hush Puppies 1-1/2 cups Quaker® or aunt Jemima® Corn Meal 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup milk 1 egg, beaten 1 small onion, finely chopped vegetable oil Combine corn meal, flour, baking powder and salt. Add milk, egg and onion; mix well. In a large skillet, drop corn meal batter by rounded teaspoonfuls into deep hot oil (375°F). Fry until golden brown. Turn once with slotted spoon for best browning. Remove from oil; drain well. Yield: About 2 dozen ------------ Vegan Hush Puppies ingredients 1 1/2 cups corn meal 1 1/2 cups water 1/3 cups soy milk 1 T oil 1 small onion, minced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup green onion, minced 1 cup pastry flour 3 t baking powder 2 1/2 t salt 1/4 t cayenne oil for frying method in a skillet or a medium heat, mix corn meal and water and cook until the corn meal begins to roll into a ball. set aside. mix all the remaining ingredients and add to the corn meal. take 2-3 T of the mixture, form into a ball and deep fry in 5 cm / 2 inches of hot oil. or you can bake the balls by placing them on an oiled cookie sheet, brush each with oil and bake at 180C/350F for 25 minutes or until golden. Guest guest
Thank you:) He is about two years old...Same age as my first adoptee. He's about 60+ lbs and has bear sized paws. He is gorgeous. I prefer adopting the older ones that for whatever reason are homeless. THough two years is still puppy to me. I adopted Mildred through the basset rescue and I adopted Henry from the shelter. I looked in my pantry for cornmeal and am out...Sorry! Anyone else have cornmeal with a recipe to share? If this is my last post today - HAVE A WONDERFUL AND VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING. WE ALL HAVE SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR. Warmly, Allison --- ~ P_T ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > Wow! But you know, I guess bassets are really fairly big dogs - but big dogs with very short legs! Our three animals are all rescue animals, btw: Ms. Katycat, The Supreme Empress of the Universe Or At Least Part of Pennsylvania, came from an SPCA in Delaware. My mother adopted her, then died shortly thereafter. So Katy came to live with us, and has ruled our household with an iron paw in a velvet glove ever since. Terra (German shepherd/golden retriever mix) came from the SPCA here, she was about 1.5 years old when we were lucky enough to find her, and Sean-the-collie came from a collie rescue group: he was about a year old when he joined our family. Guest guest
Thanks for posting these, Shawn. I like your idea of adding the jalapenos to the batter. After you posted this, I was looking around in my cookbooks here at home and I found a recipe that called for them. I think I am going to have to try it very soon. I'll post it right after this post. ~ P_T ~ All slang is metaphor, and all metaphor is poetry. -G.K. Chesterton, writer (1874-1936) ~~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~ , " MatriXeno .
