Guest guest
Ok, I need a little information from you kind folks, if ya don't mind. I'm familiar with vegetarianism obviously. I know that vegans choose no animal products or bi-products (remember Altoids contain gelatin). What exactly is lacto-ovo? Does it have something to do with dairy? Also, are there any other O's out there that I should become familiar with...perhaps Devo or Oreo, definitely not Pollo. Thanks for any help on the subject. Guest guest
Total Vegetarians eat only plant food. They do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey. Vegans not only omit all animal products from their diets, but they also eliminate them from the rest of their life. Vegans use nothing from animals, such as leather, wool, and silk. Guest guest
Oh wow, fabulous. Thank you very much Allison. Funny, I was just kidding about the pollo, but sure enough, there it is. I know pollo is chicken in Spanish and pretty sure pesco is Spanish as well. Are the other two Spanish as well and where did these terms derive from? Perhaps it is just to mask the terms " chicken " and " fish " ? Anyone, anyone? " If, at first, you do succeed, try to hide your astonishment. Guest guest
Latin seems to rule for scientific names and labels. Ovo comes from ovum or ova, which means egg. Lacto comes from lactose which is the acid in milk. I assume they're Latin words...Yes, pescado is Spanish for fish. So, pesco would be the Latin word for fish. I guess pollo is both Spanish and Latin. Warmly, Allison --- _- MatrixenO -_ <matrixeno wrote: > Oh wow, fabulous. I believe most people do not accept fish or chicken as part of a vegetarian's diet. Vegetarian, by definition, means not eating the flesh of animals: fish and chicken are animals. Main Entry: veg·e·tar·i·an·ism Pronunciation: -E- & - " ni-z & m Function: noun circa 1851 : the theory or practice of living on a diet made up of vegetables , fruits, grains, nuts, and sometimes eggs or dairy products http://www.m-w.com (Merriam-Webster online) -- It's *harmful* to vegetarians when people who eat fish or chicken refer to themselves as vegetarians....Here's an example of why it's harmful: ------------------------------- Hypothetical example: I eat chicken, and call myself a 'vegetarian'. I go to a restaurant and discuss my dinner with the waiter: what has meat, etc. I settle on a vegetable/tofu stir-fry although I know it has chicken stock (the waiter told me it does). Fine. No problem. Now, you (a vegetarian) go to the same restaurant and the waiter assures you that the vegetable/tofu stir-fry is suitable for vegetarians (because he knew I ate it, and I called myself a vegetarian). You innocently eat it. You were deceived into eating chicken which is something you would NOT have wanted to do. ---- I think it's much more fair when people who eat fish or chicken do NOT refer to themselves as vegetarians. It keeps confusion to a minimum and is fair to everyone. I personally am, btw, not a vegetarian at this particular moment in my life. I have been in the past, may be in the future, and am an active 'vegetarian sympathizer' and fellow-traveler. Most - not all - of my cooking is vegetarian. Guest guest
Thanks for posting those, Allison. I always thought Pollo was just a nasty cheap men's cologne. hehehe Back when I first started to have vegetarian leanings, my boyfriend's sister came back east visiting from her home in California. She claimed to be a vegetarian, but she still ate chicken, turkey and fish. I decided to do the same but didn't call myself a vegetarian b/c I didn't think they were really considered that since we ate of killed animals. I would refer to myself then as a " red-meat abstainer " . I gave up the chicken, turkey and fish shortly after moving out on my own. I didn't know until a few years ago that there were actual terms for this type of eating choice. Quite interesting. ~ P_T ~ ~~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~> , Allison Nations <allyanne2001> wrote: >snipped: > Pesco-Vegetarians include fish into their diets. > Pollo-Vegetarians eat poultry, such as chicken, > turkey, and duck. > > Warmly, > Allison >
Guest guest
Ha! That's funny - yes, polo is a nasty men's cologne but since it is made by Ralph Lauren, I don't think it's cheap. Even though it should be:) (Please forgive me gentlemen if any of you wear this). Yes, I would consider those that partake in eating poultry and/or fish semi vegetarians. When I first made the transition, I still ate fish but felt I couldn't really call myself vegetarian b/c of that - so I threw that out as well. However, if I were to eat meat, that would be my choice b/c I can actually kill fish and have in the past. I would theoretically only eat what I could kill. Couldn't kill anything that clucks, quacks, squeals or moos. Warmly, Allison --- ~ P_T ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > Thanks for posting those, Allison. Guest guest
Yep, they're terms and nothing more. If someone wants to claim vegetarianism but still eat fish then they have their diet category. Believe them or don't...It doesn't matter, these terms do exist whether you accept them or not.
