A day in the life of a vegetarian....

How many times has this happened to you? You go up to a lunch counter

to

buy the delicious soup and salad " veggie " option on their menu. You

want to

just order it and not think about it, but this pesky vegetarian

conscience voice

taunts you to ask some questions about the ingredients contained in

the

soup. It isn't that you don't trust people, or are a picky niggler,

but you have

over the years learned that what some consider vegetarian is not

exactly

based on fact nor does it always fit in with your personal eating

style. So you

ask:

" Hi. I would like to ask about the minestrone soup. Is it vegetarian? "

The gal behind the counter gives you that look; a mix of confusion

with busy

annoyance. She doesn't really care about what is in the soup she is

selling,

she just wants to take your order and your cash and move on to the

next

person behind you. But she looks at the soup, ladeling up a scoop and

replies, " Yeah, it only has beans, broth, carrots, onions, you know,

vegetables. There is no meat in it. "

You don't want to press, but there's that voice again; like an angel

on your

shoulder, so you ask deeper, " What is the soup base or broth stock

made

from? Did the chef use vegetable stock or chicken stock? Do you

know? " You

smile, hoping she isn't going to get pissed off as she goes to ask

the cook to

read her the recipe list.

Sure enough, the cook peeps out from behind the kitchen doors and

confesses (though unrepentantly) that yes, the soup is made with a

chicken

broth stock.

You thank them for their time and just order the veggie wrap

sandwich,

hoping but definately not in the mood to ask anyone if the tortilla

they use

contains lard.

Sound familiar? *lol*

I feel ya P_T..last night I was at dinner in a new Mexican

restaurant. On the menu, there was something called Vegetarian Soup.

The first ingredient listed on the menus for this soup was 'homemade

chicken broth'...oh my. I also have a terrible time in ethnic

restaurants making sure my requests are understood. I had to ask at

least 6 times whether or not the rice is made with chicken stock. On

the third attempt the server pointed to the the " Vegetarian " soup and

said this is made with chicken stock. I just figure I'll keep asking;

it is somewhat annoying but important to me nonetheless. The best

experiences I have had in local, small (the lil holes in wall are the

best imho) Mexican restaurants was when my roomate was pretty much

fluent in Spanish. My questions were always answered and there was no

confusion or frustation on my part or the server's. We almost always

got free drinks or dessert too! Ahh, the good ole days :P

Yes, oh yes I know this scene well, P.T.! There wasn't one single

soup at work I could eat (I'm allergic to beef and chicken), though

they sure looked tempting. It was really maddening. On the rare

occasion when they really served vegetarian vegatable soup it was

loaded with enough pepper to choke a horse. I can't tell you how

many days the only thing I could eat there was another doggoned

salad. You're not alone in this.
