Guest guest
My 9 y/o daughter chooses to be veggie. Does anyone have opinions on things like Boca Burgers, Garden Burgers, etc.? She'd like to try some of the meat subs and I don't want to sink a bunch of money into products that are yucky. DH won't eat the subs. I tried Morningstar once sausage once, he made it clear not to serve it to him again. TIA Robin in NC
Guest guest
We went by the store tonight and found some of the flamed grilled Boca Burgers. I fixed them in the skillet and all the kids ate them up! I was pleasantly surprised. Cosco has the regular Boca Burgers in big packs. Has anyone tried these? I'm going to compare them to the Morningstar brand to see which we like better. Robin in NC
Guest guest
The only sausage I've tried was Morningstar breakfast sausage and it was yummy. I crumble them and add them to my omelettes. Morningstar bacon is great too. My favorite burgers are the Morningstar brand...The grilled one. It tastes like a fast food burger, if that's what you're going for. The chick'n nuggets are yummy too. Boca has a great spicy, breaded chicken patty that makes a great sandwich. I'm not big on corndogs but my son loves the Morningstar cornies. Stuff like this is good to have around for the kids and convenience. Warmly, Allison --- rwhitt1212 wrote: > My 9 y/o daughter chooses to be veggie. Guest guest
I buy Boca's at COSTCO 2-3 boxes at a time. They are quite good. For dishes that do not require a lot of cooking once they are added, they also work nicely as a crumble. What I like most of all is the high level of protein in them. Guest guest
My new favorite meat sub is (are?) the TVP... I got some in bulk from the health store in " chunk " form... they had the crumbles too! I loved them in the slow cooker since I have to " regenerate " them anyway! My kids won't eat the Boca (or other brands) burgers, although I love them... and as for chik'n nuggets, I found Quorn to be exceptionally yummy. -dawn , " daveo " <daveo@m...> wrote: > I buy Boca's at COSTCO 2-3 boxes at a time. Guest guest
If you can, try a Harvey's veggie burger (cooked on a clean grill of course) The Harvey's veggie burger is so similiar in taste and texture to the old fast food burgers i used to eat, the first time i had one i took it back to the store and complained that they had served me meat. Honest. Very full of flavour... of course I'm not too interested in the flavours of meat anymore (To those of you who know me personally, my friend and I run the only vegetarian/vegan restaurant in our region) So we get to replace it with things that taste better, but have the same heavy textures. --- rwhitt1212 wrote: > My 9 y/o daughter chooses to be veggie. I usually like the 'frankly veggie' ones that aren't pretending to be meat, with my favorite brand being Gardenburger. I like the Gardenburger 'flame roasted veggie' burgers, their Greek burgers, the mushroom burgers, others I forget (the stores here don't carry them - rats!). I also like zucchini burgers that I make myself in summer when we have the proverbial excess of zucchini. Recipe follows. My husband will eat these too, that's a plus for me. You can freeze these. Pat (glad to be back) ------------- VEGGIE BURGERS WITH ZUCCHINI 2 cloves garlic (grated) 1 onion (grated) 2 carrots (shredded) 1 small zucchini (shredded) 1 small summer squash (shredded) 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 1/2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 beaten egg 1 tbs tamari 1 1/2 cups flour (Note: this is the recipe as we found it and we immediately modified it. To our taste it was better with lots more onion. It held together better with two eggs. Also, I generally don't have summer squash, so just use two zucchini.) -Heat garlic and onion in olive oil over low heat for 5 minutes. -Add squash, zucchini, and carrots and heat for 2 more minutes. -Remove from heat and add oats, cheese, and egg. -Add tamari. -Refrigerate for 1 hr. -Dredge patties in flour. Broil or fry as usual. -------------- -- Pat Meadows CLICK DAILY TO FEED THE HUNGRY United States: http://www.stopthehunger.com/ International: http://www.thehungersite.com/

I think they are nasty, nasty things. They are very like nasty overdone hamburger. I tried them once and thought they were horrid -- then tried them again, as I continued to read other people raving about them and eventually a third time. Nope, I just don't like them. Certainly, lots of people seem to think they're great. Try 'Gardenburger' brand if you can find it too, they're nice (IMHO). Guest guest
I like the Boca brand well enough. All the brands have subtle and perhaps not so subtle differences to their flavor, I tend to enjoy this bit of variety, and would likely get bored with them if they were all alike. Boca and MorningStar are definately the ones to choose when going for that " like-meat " flavor. However, I never really liked meat-burgers much or that flavor, so I prefer Gardenburger brand items to place on a whole wheat bun. They are delicious and have the shape of a burger but not that meat-flavor of the other brands. Our Costco out here in Oregon carries these in bulk bags I know Gardenburger Company was started by a guy in Portland, but I am pretty sure they are distributed nationally now. But if your kids want meaty-tasting burgers, then they'd no doubt prefer Boca. ~ P_T ~ The poet judges not as a judge judges but as the sun falling around a helpless thing. -Walt Whitman, poet (1819-92) ~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~*~~~~~*~~~~*~~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> , rwhitt1212@a... wrote: > We went by the store tonight and found some of the flamed grilled Boca > Burgers. Guest guest
Quorn is a " mycoprotein " from the mushroom family (not mushrooms-- CYA). It is another brand of " pretend meat " and they seem to concentrate on simulating the " white meats " (chick'n). The texture is really great, although almost too much like meat... I have tried the nuggets and the " pretend chicken breast pieces " and both are exceptional. hope this helps! -dawn , rwhitt1212@a... wrote: > In a message dated 01/18/2003 8:51:56 PM Eastern Standard Time, > skgpeace writes: > > > > Quorn to > > be exceptionally yummy. > > > > New word/product to me, please elaborate. Guest guest
I actually have a funny story about the Harvey's veggie burger... My Dad and I went there for dinner when those burgers first came out, and I ordered one, and Dad got the normal burger... anyway, when they were asking what toppings I wanted on my veggie, Dad pipes up that I want bacon on it... The girl behind the counter (and I) looked at him like he had two heads... then he explained that since you put veggies on a meat burger, you should put meat as the toppings on a veggie burger. He was only joking though.... hehehehe.... and it was pretty funny... LOL ~*~Sara in Toronto~*~ ID: fitgirl1979 " I considered atheism but there weren't enough holidays. Guest guest
Cute story. He kind of made some sense there. I have never heard of Harvey burgers before sleepingtao mentioned it here. They sound interesting. Did some reading about them after a quick web- search. Sounds like they taste too much like meat for my personal preference; guess I'll stick with Gardenburger.
