Catfood

This is in reply to several emails on this subject ;=)

Recently someone very kind on this list (I think) responded to my query

about cat food. I was concerned about the contents of commercial

catfood, especially about the unhiegenic / unaesthetic / unethical?

practice of putting let us say 'unacceptable' meat into petfood. I have

since then put my cat on Wellness adult catfood. It has human quality

chicken in it and a lot of very very good things as well. (Er, that

doesn't mean the chickens are like humans, just that humans could, if

they were not vegetarian, eat it safely ;=) Don't you just *love* some

of this labelling!? :=) )

Also, another email correspondent - from my Townhounds list, I think -

recommended Fidelio catfood, as likewise having human quality meat.

Unfortuntely I couldn't get that one here so I happily went for the

suggestion from this list - Lee-Gwen I think it was ;=)

You *can* it seems safely feed a cat a veggie diet, but oh dear all the

supplements etc you have to be sure they get in the proper amounts. And

then there is the dispute/worry over whether synthesized taurine or

whatever it is does the same as the stuff in meat. I decided I'd rather

go this way with meat-containing high-grade food - certainly for now.

Meat it is, but it shouldn't be anything tooooo offensive if you're used

to feeding your cat regular catfood anyway.

I buy the dry kibble and he loves it, as indeed he should, the lucky

little lad. It costs a little more, but I figure it's worth it for my

peace of mind - not to mention Misha's health ;=)

Nope, this one isn't down to me. My cats eat Friskies' Go Cat and won't

touch any other brand of dried food. I certainly can't afford to try out

the premium brands but I don't think they would eat them anyway. For the

various strays who come into our house to eat, I have taken to leaving a

bowl of homebrand cat food outside but no-one seems to be touching it yet.

I guess they would rather come in and steal from our cats! I am getting a

bit worried about one cat who visits every other day or thereabouts and she

is why I put the bowl of food outside. She is very thin.

I do know what you mean about cats who gorge themselves to the point of

making themselves ill. One of our cats, Funny Face (the other is Kitchen

Floor Tile, believe it or not - they are both black and white) used to do

this a lot, and still does a bit. He was a stray who adopted us and he

needs to know that food will be there whenever he wants to check out the

bowl. Now his major problem is furballs - and big ones! Oh the joys of a

fluffy cat who won't let anyone groom him ...

I don't know if this will help him or not, but we find that

the Pounce Hairball Treats make a real difference for our

cat. We give her 3 or 4 of them twice a week. She loves

them. And as long as we keep doing this twice a week, she

has no hairball troubles.

These are with the regular treats in the supermarkets: but

they say 'Pounce Hairball Treats'.

I did look for hairball prevention thingummies when I was at the supermarket

the other day but I didn't find anything. I will try again today at a

bigger one. We are certainly interested! He throws up very big hunks of

hair, particularly after my Lady has given him a hair cut. That can't be

comfortable for him - and it certainly isn't comfortable for me because I am

the one who has to deal with it (that's the deal - I cope with animal messes

and she kills cockroaches about which I am phobic).
