Guest guest
Now wait a minute. I was set and ready to go into the Air Force before my Father died, which was the only thing that held me back. After that, life took off and I met hubby, had babies, etc. SO, I never made it to the military. I was enlisting because it was an opportunity for me to work, have an education, travel, meet people, etc. I had dropped out of college and had no direction. I feel many people enlist for much the same reason. Others have no place else to go. My Uncle was 'forced' into the armed forces b/c he was a punk in school. The judge gave him two choices: the military or jail. No one I know that has served in the military (both parents included) are war hungry, gun toting individuals ready to fight, fight, fight. Both my parents served in the Air Force. My Mother was in the reserves up until the mid 80's. Please be more careful about what it is you're accusing people of thinking and doing. Guest guest
I apologize that i didn't take into account the rare instances when " juvenille delinquents " are coerced into joining the army. ditto for the people who truly cannot get a job elsewhere. but i still standby my opinion as it applies to people with no direction, because i've been there and the military didnt' even cross my mind. i didn't accuse everyone who joins the military of being gun-toting, bloodthirsty freaks (I have a professor who is a vietnam vet (voluntary) whom i admire a great deal). All I meant to imply is that it is hard to serve in the military and claim you are " anti- war " . also the military changes peoples way of thinking their whole personality. e.g. totally laid back disorganized people can turn anal retentive. Guest guest
My Dad was, up until his death, a very laid back, fun loving and incredibly disorganized person. (Which is why I had to spend the next year and mucho dollars in probate court). As for my Mother...Oh good god. Anal is definitely not a word I'd use for her either. I had a job at the time. I was not a juvenile delinquent, I just wanted some structure. Nothing wrong with that. I never have been interested in war. But I do have a healthy respect for the veterans whom fought in wars. Until you've walked a mile in their shoes..... Guest guest
Obviously, " Super Dave " is another DAVE. >>...some of us anti-war " peacenik " types are against all wars period<< Maybe instead of slandering the motives of other people, who you obviously do not know, you could spend some time just telling us WHY you are a " peacenik. " Deciding if the military serves a purpose in our complicated world is an issue which all of us can decide as a group. Dave " the other one " PS. The one who was a US Marine and served in the Vietnam War before he turned 21. The one who also opposes the Iraq War. PPS. I'm not opposed to war. I just pray that we as a society have the wisdom to find the other alternatives, which usually means putting all the BS politics aside and acting with peaceful intent years before we need to go to war.
