It seems didn't take my attempt to seriously. Just as

well, I think ;=) In recompense for having tried to desert the list, I

offer the following recipe ;=)

best,

pat sant

------------

I wish I could say that this is my own recipe, because it's good. It is,

however, one that was used to demonstrate tempeh at our local market's

organic food shop. I have made it about three times now (I say 'about',

because my dh also cooks and he has made it too ;=).). Anyway, here it

is - as provided by the shop - with a minor change because of what I

assume was a typo.

TEMPEH CURRY

2-3 Tbsp Vegetable oil (use a bit of sesame oil for added flavour)

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 medium onion cut finely in 1/4 rings

1 Tbsp grated or finely chopped ginger

2-3 garlic cloves, chopped

fresh chilli to taste of 1 tsp chilli powder (here he means cayenne -

not Mexican mix)

1 tsp turmeric

2 tsp coriander powder

1 tsp anise seed powder (grind anise seeds in a coffee grinder or mill)

1 (or more) can/s diced tomatoes (I used one)

10 lime leaves (also known as kaffir leaves - I used dried ones in lieu

of fresh)

4 Tbsp grated coconut (I used desiccated unsweetened coconut)

6-10 pitted dates, chopped

250 grams or more of tempeh (cubed)

1 tin coconut milk

fresh coriander, chopped (cilantro)

Heat oil, add mustard and cumin seeds until they begin to pop. Add

onion, ginger, chilli and garlic in that order and fry until soft. Add

the turmeric and coriander powder and fry for a few seconds.

Add the tomato, salt and grated coconut and dates. Add the coconut milk

and enough water to cover the mixture. Simmer for about 5 minutes.

Add the cubed tempeh. Bring to the boil and simmer for another 5

minutes. Add the fresh coriander. When beginning to boil again remove

from heat.

Serve over rice. Garnish with chopped coriander (cilantro).

Hi Allison,

Yes, I just saw your post looking for tempeh recipes this morning - and

I posted my recipe last night. Nice coincidence!

Yes, tempeh is good, and yes we have had it before - even had this

particular recipe, we figure, about four times now (not counting

leftovers).

There were some good tempeh recipes posted about a month ago, I think -

and I can recommend the Tempeh Stroganoff one and the Thai Tempeh - both

of which we have tried two or more times ;=) I believe PT has put them

in the files. Anyway, they came from Marie in the Netherlands and if you

can't find them in the files, I have copies on my computer and can

forward them again ;=)

And yes tempeh is really really good. Nice and firm, if you want it to

be - but you can crumble it, mash it and do other things to it if you

like, I understand (we don't do that with it - yet). It also fries

nicely - get nice and crisp - if that's your thing. And it *marinates*

well, so it takes on wonderful flavours. We have only used it in the

last few months, so we are really beginners at it, but I do wish we'd

found it, like, some twenty or so years ago ;=) Until recently, we had

only experienced it in asian vegetarian restaurants - never consciously

saw it in foodstores.

So go ahead and have fun with it!

Best,

pat sant

Thank you so much. I'm not a huge fan of tofu so I

definitely need a good protein source. Guess I'll

just experiment away.
