Guest guest
So in your opinion the Morning Star was OK? I've tried patties and links in other brands and have found none that tasted like anything. We have tried the Boca Burger Flame Grilled and like them the best so far. It's expensive to hit or miss trying to see what they all taste like. Robin in NC
Guest guest
When I was buying the fakey bacon to make the pasta carbonara, I also picked up some Morningstar Farms Breakfast Links. I've pretty much avoided a lot of the meat substitutes, because the texture is never something I've liked, but I thought " wtf " . Yesterday I was craving breakfast, so while I was waiting for the biker and my roommate to get back from paddling I did the prep for breakfast burritos and omlettes. While I was dicing peppers and onions, etc, I also cooked and crumbles a couple of the soy sausage links. I didn't tell anyone that it was fake sausage; I just offered it as one of the options when I was making their eggs. The concensus was .. YUM! Everyone liked it, and the carnivoires in my life didn't even realize it wasn't meat. The flavour was good, and the texture was very close to the meat alternatives. Three thumbs up from our house -- Sherri If you're happy and you know it, clunk your chains.
Guest guest
I agree...Their links are the best fakey sausages I've ever tried. They're better than the patties. I tried Boca Italian sausages but prefer the Italian sausage I made from tempeh. I also tried their smoked links and that too was okay. I chopped them up and cooked them in sourkraut, with lots of stone ground mustard. The sausages are just too dry. The flavor is pretty decent thought. I just checked my freezer to be sure, and yes, what I bought was Morningstar Farms Breakfast Links. They tasted like regular breakfast links, and the texture was very close to " normal " breakfast sausage links as well. I fed them to my bf and roommate, and neither of them noticed that it wasn't meat sausage. I should point out, though, that it was cooked and crumbled into omlettes and/or breakfast burritos (I was taking individual orders) and not eaten on its own. I never ate sausage on its own, when I ate meat - too much meat taste! I did taste some of it on its own though, and found it quite good. The fakey bacon, otoh, I was NOT impressed with. I can't imagine cooking it up and eating it on its own. It was good, however, in place of real bacon in the carbonara - gave the smokey flavour and sort of looked like real bacon, though the colour was kind of startling. The texture was similar, though obviously not " real " bacon. As for burgers, etc, my preference is BocaBurger Flame Grilled or Original (vegan) burgers as well, and I've found the Morningstar Farms Chic Patties to be a reasonable facsimile for chicken burgers in a variety of recipes or just on a bun with lettuce, tomato, mustard, etc. Wouldn't it be nice if some of these places has samles we could g3et for a minimal price, so that we could try their products out before committing to the cost of some of them only to find out that they're NOT what we expected? -- Sherri Men are like fine wine. Guest guest
This brand of bacon (i.e., breakfast strips) is one of the week end staples in my house. I use a bit more olive oil than suggested and then drain the bacon strips on paper towels, but they come out as crisp as I remember the best " real stuff " ever being. Add two scoops of country gravy (with a crumbled sausage patty mixed in) over a decent sized helping of Texas hash browns, fresh buttermilk biscuits, strawberry jam, and my Sunday's is off to a fine beginning. :-) DaveO Sherri [sherria] >>[re: morning star farms] The fakey bacon, otoh, I was NOT impressed with. Guest guest
I have spent the money and tested EVERYTHING, here are the favs around here. Morning Star in general seems to have the best quality overall. Morning Star Grillers Prime are excellent and even hold up well on the grill. Morning Star Breakfast Links are tasty, the Breakfast Patties are even better. The Morning Star Recipe Crumbles are good for any recipe that requires ground beef but it is rather easy to burn!! My husband goes nuts for the Gardenburger Riblets when he is having a serious meat-craving. (Poor guy, I kinda shoved him into vegetarianism!!) I also toss the Gardenburger meatballs into pasta dishes from time to time to time and they aren't bad. My kids love the MorningStar bacon in sandwiches although I think it has the consistancy of thin styrofoam, of course they have never tasted real bacon so they don't have any preconceived notions about how it should taste!! The Morning Star chicken patties and nuggets are pretty good but Boca makes pretty good versions of these also. To save money, start by thinking of your " meat portion " as a side dish rather than the main part of the meal. When we break out the veggie burgers we use only three patties for a family of five. Half of a burger is more than enough per person if you have yummy side dishes, salad, fruit, or whatever on the side. I also bake fresh bread often. I find the process very therapeutic and it is yummy, inexpensive, and filling!! The advocates of the Atkins' diet would gasp in shock but I weigh 98 pounds after giving birth to 5 kids so bread must not be ALL bad!! Yes, that would be nice. Or free samples. I've been getting $1.00-off coupons on Morningstar Farms stuff, they're nice. Trouble is, I prefer the Gardenburgers - which aren't carried in the grocery store I usually go to. I think I'll ask the manager to start carrying them.. I've done this before with various items, and found the stores to be very receptive to requests. Both DH and I have found that we dislike the 'fake hamburger' patties intensely. To us, they taste like overdone hamburger, which neither one of us likes either. There's a good chance however that we'll like the 'frankly veggie' patties that aren't trying to imitate hamburger. And of these, my preference is for Gardenburgers: a couple of their varieties: the Greek ones, the flame-roasted veggie one, others that I forget. Our store doesn't carry them though, so we do get Morningstar Farm products although I don't like them as well as Gardenburgers. Of the Morningstar patties, so far I like the Spicy Black Bean patties the best. Guest guest
Not!! While you spent that morning catching zzzzzz, Shawn, I was sailing past Alcatraz Island, under the Golden Gate Bridge, and maybe ten miles out into a sunny Pacific Ocean. No time for naps that day... Guest guest
So...what will we all be missing next Sunday? ;-) I'm expecting to spend that afternoon in Half Moon Bay on the coast just south of San Francisco visiting with friends. Not veggie friends, but they like to impress me with the veggie stuff they prepare. It's usually a treat for me. If the afternoon fog doesn't get in the way, it ought to be a great sunset.
