And yes, you're right - oil is a part of our life in the 21st century etc etc. And so are a lot of things, etc etc. Environmental concerns are also important. Without getting into the whole SUV debate again (my gas-eater is less of a gas-eater than your gas-eater - duh!), are there fairly simple and ethical ways we can help, however little. We, for example, have chosen not to drive a car - since the early (northern) winter of 1973 (whew, longer than I remembered ;=)), but of course when we can't walk to where we need to go we have to take public transport, including taxis. And on holiday we fly (using air transport, that is). There are those who then discount our non-car-owning/status because we still add to pollution by using alternate means of transport when needed. Perhaps they are right. We can all do only what we can do - Any ideas? And yes, I am fully aware I have opened myself up to attack on a whole buncha grounds - really ;=) Be gentle (as Rock said to Doris). best, pat sant -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. Ive never had my drivers license- I refuse- and people treat me like a freak for it. I walk everywhere. I don't refuse rides or anything and I take buses and stuff- transportation is necessary for modern life- but I just feel by doing that I make a huge difference. Congrats and kudos to you, you rock. Guest guest
Well, if you all are ever in my area and need a lift.... *lol* I was a bit of a late bloomer in the DMV dept and felt much like you three have expressed. However having kids changed all that and then living in more rural communities where public transportation was nonexistant. But if you can do it and are willing, I say bravo. Nothing worse on the roads than a reluctant driver, IMO. ~ PT ~ Who prays for Satan?Ê Who, in 1,800 years, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most? ~ Mark Twain Happy Valentine's Day! xxxoooxxxoooxxxoooxxxoooxxxoooxxxoooxxxooooooooooooo , " dave <dave4sale> " < dave4sale> wrote: > i am also a non-driver if i havent mentioned... i think that's really > great that you are too. felt like i was the only one.. Guest guest
> Nothing worse on the roads > than a reluctant driver, IMO. > LOL - Well, that's a step up from what people like us usually get: OH, I Guess You're Not Allowed To Drive Anymore, Right? ;=) It's okay, PT. Even those of us who have decided not to drive understand that there are far more people who have no choice - and no, we don't think we are better than you and we certainly don't blame you for driving ;=) I got my first car and driver's license when my son was in the early years of schooling - it's almost impossible in most places to cope with kids and a career and a social life without private means of transport. These days (the last gazillion years) we handle it by living in the city centre (whichever city) - good for urban renewal if it hasn't already happened - and using public transport when necessary - good for the promotion of public transport etc. Well, you know the drill. It isn't for everyone, I understand. What is sometimes irritating is finding that the driver - nondriver thingie is even more controversial than the vegetarian - nonvegetarian thingie. I mean, people can't assume we belong to some weird religious sect (no, I'm not putting down weird religious sects - they're often the most interesting ;=) don't you think?) because they (the weird religious people ;=)) often if not always (ask our neighbours) take themselves off to the country to raise organic vegetables etc. and here we are keeping herbs in our kitchen 15 storeys above the hum of city traffic ;=) and - here's the real kicker - Don't Even Go To Church ;=) Okay, guys, I've put in lots of smileys so as to indicate that I am serious but I am also laughing at some of the things I am saying etc etc. Please don't dump on me this morning - wait until this afternoon when I am feeling stronger because yesterday was 14 Feb and although I don't revere many saints I think St V is worthy of a bottle of wine once a year ;=) He enjoyed it, we enjoyed it, we hope *you* enjoyed it ;=) best, pat sant best, pat -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. I know you don't look down on me for driving. And yes, I got my driver's license at that time of life, too. People used to ask me the weirdest stuff when they found out I didn't drive. I used to always try to come up with even weirder replies for their questions just to see the looks I'd get. ~ PT ~ Liberty is given by nature even to mute animals. -Publius Cornelius Tacitus, historian (55-117)
