Guest guest
Hi everyone, i've got a veggie support topic to discuss. Its relevant to me, and hopefully to others on the list. I'm thinking of becoming a vegan. The 3 things i'm most concerned about in doing this is what am i gonna eat (i'm mainly worried about lunches and snacks), how i'm gonna manage to check everything i buy (although i've ordered the animal free shopper book) and what i'm gonna tell my friends and family. Any pearls of wisdom? Laura Tom, Tom, the piper's son Stole a pig and away did run. The pig did bite the stupid boy, And serve him right. He should stick to soy. - Josh Bentley, a Vegan Poet The boy stood on the burning deck Whence all but he had fled, Holding tight his tofu bar And his loaf of granary bread... - Josh Bentley, a Vegan Poet _______________ Chat online in real time with MSN Messenger http://messenger.msn.co.uk
Guest guest
That is a great topic, Laura. I wish I had some pearls to share with you. I have no desire to become vegan right now. I wish you much success; I know you will do well. Hopefully some of our vegan members can share things that helped them during transition. ~ PT ~ Self-reverence, self-knowledge, self-control. Guest guest
Learn how to make complex proteins out of simple ones and you'll be fine, as long as you get your omega3s (flaxseed oil) b12 (supplement or fortified soy milk) and don't worry too much about it if one day you slip up and something gets in your dish you didnt know about.. its a step by step process, not an on off switch- like life. Make it a hobby and try more ethnic variations on foods- there is a ton of great vegan food to be had, dont ever let anyone tell you its a restriction- it's a commitment, just like sitting down to write a novel or taking a university course. Learn about nutrition and you'll be fine. Also, it never hurt anyone to take a good multivitamin. after awhile it becomes second nature, and the energy boost alone, is incredible- do it right and you'll have way more energy- not less. You'll get well quicker when everyone else is still sick, you'll need less sleep, you'll be able to manage your weight very easily because your system isnt bogged down- all in all, I don't think humans are herbivores- but due to the incredibly unhealthy environment we are in, being a vegan just seems right, for me. k --- Laura Moore <child_of_the_80s wrote: > > Hi everyone, > > i've got a veggie support topic to discuss. Guest guest
Laura Moore [child_of_the_80s] >>...I'm thinking of becoming a vegan...Any pearls of wisdom?<< Here's a vegan article published yesterday about how one family made the transition. IMO, quite interesting especially if you have kids. DaveO ps. In case anyone wonders why I don't post full articles, it's simple. Doing so is against the law. The snippets I usually post are okay under the " fair use " portion of the law. You can download the full text for your own use, but you cannot post it anywhere in it's entirety. For the moment, such rules on the web are pretty loose, but it's still against the spirit of the law. ------------------ The vegan view: Saying no to meat products becomes a family affair By Nadia Lerner Staff Writer February 17, 2003 Most started as meat eaters, but somewhere along the line they stopped using animal products and became vegans. Meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, even honey are crossed off their list. Ditto for leather, fur and wool. (While vegetarians don't eat meat, unlike vegans, they do eat dairy and eggs and use animal-related products.) Although many of us don't think about food sources and the often inhumane conditions under which these animals are kept and slaughtered, vegans do. While the vegan fringe element has hit the front pages through such acts as hurling paint at women in furs, this militant behavior does not reflect the vegan majority who choose noncontentious, educational means to spread their beliefs: Some distribute literature at peaceful demonstrations; others discuss their views only when asked. Even though going against the mainstream comes with its own set of challenges, the transition was easy for some; for others, more of a struggle. Good, because I try to post at least one a day and most days I manage to type up and post 2 or 3. Others here have been sharing recipes, too. Daveo made a nice suggestion which we have been following so it is easier to find the recipe posts amongst the OT posts. We put the word recipe in brackets in the post title. > Also, learning about food additives that may be harmful and not on the " approved list " for vegetarians is a biggie -- it seems a lot of bad ingredients get hidden by the general term " natural flavoring " . That is an interesting topic. I don't know how we'd find out unless we wrote letter to the food manufacturers, but it would be worth a shot to see what type of response they offered. I try to avoid most foods that aren't labeled to my satisfaction, but confess that at times, for convenience sake, I will buy non-organic packaged foods. > Another topic might be vitamins - do we need them, and if so what should be avoided and why. I take vitamins! I make a it a regular practice to do so and it is now a habit. I also take certain herbs and spices in capsule form for different ailments like the common cold to thwart the duration. They do seem to help and whatever vitamins my body doesn't use...well, it gets rid of. > Thanks, > Phil M. > Kailua, Hawaii I have a sister living in Makaha.
