I know you can but that's not a reason. > Sometimes it seems that people are trying to be better than God. I don't think > it will work. Jack S > .. Leaving god out of it for the moment (and permanently, as far as I am concerned), one might want to avoid eggs and dairy for health reasons, and, in my case, because one doesn't like the idea of the conditions under which the milk cows and egg-laying hens exist. Both would be pretty good reasons, I would say. I am not trying to be better than you or anything else; I was merely responding to a post regarding going vegan. I should have thought that was a pretty safe thing to do on this list. And yes, I read Daveo's earlier post - I agree with him that it is difficult - and I respect the decision he has made. I once wrote - I think it was on this list - that I preferred calling myself a vegetarian to calling myself a vegan becauses I was already a very successful vegetarian ;=) Now I feel it is time for me to try some of these excellent *vegan* recipes that are posted here and elsewhere. I'm sorry that that annoys you. But puh-leez leave god out of it if you write to or about me. It doesn't cut any ice, but it does offend other people and I don't like to have other people hurt by something that I have instigated or participated in. (And that, by the way, is another good reason you should be pleased I am now a vegetarian and am trying to be a vegan - there were times when I was younger and actually *ate* my fellow critters, and I would have chewed you up and spat you out for a remark like that one ;=)) Relax, my friend. We're all together here ;=) You eat what you want, okay? best, pat sant -- SANTBROWN townhounds/ http://www.angelfire.com/art/pendragon/ ---------- * " Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. Guest guest
You could also mention the obvious health benefits, the chance to become even more dedicated to learning about nutrition, and the obvious points about how the benefits to the environment are even greater, as well as causing less suffering, and being more in control of your body and how it processes food. But thats just a start. > one might want to avoid eggs and dairy > for health reasons, > and, in my case, because one doesn't like the idea > of the conditions > under which the milk cows and egg-laying hens exist. > Both would be > pretty good reasons, I would say. Guest guest
Sant & Brown [santbrown] >>And yes, I read Daveo's earlier post [about being vegan] - I agree with him that it is difficult - and I respect the decision he has made...<< To elaborate on those veggie choices, let me add. As a vegan, I excluded everything I understood to be nonvegan, including leather, wool, dairy, honey, butter, and eggs. As a businessman, I'm often involved with dining related meetings where the menu is somewhat limited. In those situations, being veggie is far less complicated than being vegan. Let me explain. Avoiding potatoes because there's butter or milk in them, or avoiding pasta and bread because there might be egg or dairy in them, or a cream sauce because there might be milk in it was just " too much of a risk " to take when a substantial financial deal is on the table. Being part of the team and still being veggie was considerably more doable. Don't get me wrong, there were times when I could have been accommodated as a vegan, but they were somewhat more rare. In the bigger picture, my ethics are concerned primarily for the death of an animal rather than the disposition of animal products. As a veggie, my personal use of leather is nil. (Except for a couple of historical/sentimental items, there's no leather in my house) Soy milk is usually on my shopping list. I use 2-4 dozen eggs a year, mostly for cooking. I also use egg replacers quite often. I always use butter in lieu of the partially dehydrogenated fats in margarine. When I'm out, I specify that I'm a vegetarian who eats eggs and dairy. I ask the base of all soups on the menu and in addition to complaining when a veggie soup has a chicken stock, I decline to eat it. For anyone who seeks to be vegan, I say go for it!! I hope you can eventually write a better vegan story than I did. DaveO

Guest guest
Hi DaveO, Thanks for that - it gives me something to strive for ;=) Right now I'm nowhere near it, but I do what I can. I think you're admirable! best, pat > > To elaborate on those veggie choices, let me add.
