East Side Ovens ~ Frances' Slow Cooked Sloppy Joes

Recipe By :East Side Ovens, Milwaukee, WI

Serving Size : 8 Preparation Time :0:00

Categories : Crockpot

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

-------- ------------ --------------------------------

1 small onion -- chopped

1 small green bell pepper -- cored, chopped

3 ribs celery -- chopped

24 ounces chili sauce -- (or 2 bottles)

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (see tip)

2 tablespoons prepared mustard

2 tablespoons fresh grated horseradish (not creamed)

3 cups texturized vegetable protein (TVP) granules

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Put in slow cooker and set at high. Cook 1

hour, then reduce heat to medium and cook another 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

This dish also can be baked: To bake, place covered in a 350-degree oven for 10

minutes. Reduce heat to 300 degrees, cover and cook another 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Check occasionally so mixture does not burn. Serve on whole-grain buns.

TIP : TVP is available at Outpost Natural Foods, health food stores, and other

specialty food stores.

TIP : Crockpot : This recipe works best when made in a slow cooker as mixture is

less likely to burn.

TIP : Some Worcestershire sauces include a small amount of anchovies in them.

Check labels and select a vegan product.
