Guest guest
Hi all, I just bought a 4-qt. and a 1.5-qt crock pot yesterday and have been browsing the Web for recipes. I thought I'd start with a basic bean recipe of some kind, but am noticing that some of the recipes say I should soak beans first before putting them in to the crock, and others say I can just rinse the beans and put them into the crock with no soaking. I'm not really sure what to do. Also, do the dry soup and salad seasoning packets work well with most beans? Would I find vegetable stock in the supermarket? Sorry to be starting out with sooo many ????'s, but I have NEVER cooked with a crock before and everything sounds so tempting, I just don't know where to start! Oh, and it's great finding this site, as most of the recipes I've come across want you to use " unmentionables " in them. So, hello to everyone! Guest guest
I've had good luck with just putting the beans in the crockpot if I'm cooking on low temperature. When I tried this on high temperature I ended up with tough beans. If you aren't sure which to do and you have the time, then soaking them first is probably a good way to go. Where I shop, vegetable stock is found in cans right next to chicken and beef broth, usually near the soup area. I usually use the vegetable cubes and some water instead because it is cheaper. I haven't tried the soup and salad seasoning packets. Let us know if you try it and they work well! -Angela - janile44 Wednesday, December 03, 2003 12:22 PM New here...questions already! Guest guest
Wow! Thanks for such speedy answers to my questions! I'm going to get off the computer and head out to the store right now (my eyes are burning from poking around online all morning for recipes for my new crocks! LOL). Anyway, after all my " browsing " I've noticed that most of the recipes seem to call for the soaking, or at least par- cooking the beans first, so I guess I'll have to stop my super-lazy- ways and do one or the other! :^/ I suppose when I get more into the crock cooking and want to branch out by adding more ingredients to recipes, I'd eventually have to have the beans softened first anyway, otherwise I'd have to be adding everything separately to avoid " mushiness " issues. Is that the main reason for getting the beans softened first? I know this probably sounds pretty lame to anyone with crocking experience, but I'll be using the crock for the first time in my life (and I'm no 20 year old...LOLx10)! Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it! Janile , " Spectrum " <spectrum@d...> wrote: > I've had good luck with just putting the beans in the crockpot if I'm cooking on low temperature.
