Guest guest
Hi! I have made something like this without the pork and beans cans. I usually have cooked all the different beans from dry, but cans of the beans are faster. I'd suggest using either just PLAIN canned navy beans (in place of the " P-and-B's " ) or using canned VEGETARIAN baked beans. I used a package of " Fantastic Foods " brand " vegetarian sloppy joe mix " , which has not only the TVP, but also the seasonings that the P-and-B stuff usually adds to the flavor mix, minus the " Pxxx " . I also used a package or 2 (depending on how large a batch I was making) of Boca Crumbles (any TVP product probably would work). I did NOT add any " bacon " at all. (I really don't like veg. " bacon " much.) Instead, I put in about a teaspoonful or so of " Liquid Smoke " natural smoke flavoring and either brown sugar, maple syrup, honey or something similar to make the " sweet " flavor. Any favorite barbecue sauce is fine for something like this. I make my own and use an organic ketchup, cider vinegar, brown sugar, seasonings and smoke flavoring...The bean dish comes out really TASTY and my DH just LOVES it. THIS was a dish (cooked in my largest Crock Pot) that I took a couple years ago to a large potluck picnic and made it deliberately not only vegetarian, but also (as far as I could tell) vegan. (Didn't use honey or brown sugar). It was so well-recieved by all the meat-eaters that I only got a tablespoonful and DH, who was at the end of the food line, missed it entirely! I had more at home for him, so he got some later. Have a great weekend, everyone! --Laura B., in Illinois Crockpot Hobo Beans 1 large can Pork & Beans, drained slightly 1 small can red or kidney beans, drained slightly 1 small can lima beans or black eyed peas, drained slightly 1 cup TVP reconstituted or a pack of Crumbles 1 pound bacon, cubed, cooked and drained 1 cup chopped onions 1 1/2 cups Bar-B-Que sauce Mix all except TVP or Crumbles in crockpot and cook 5 hours on lo then toss in the TVP or Crumbles and let cook 1/2 hr longer.
