I didn't include this egroup since it wasn't a recipe but here's the info I had in my paper:

There was an article in yesterday's paper saying that McDonald's Corp has been accused in a lawsuit of using beef fat in the preparation of french fries, despite saying a decade ago that it would cook its fries in pure vegetable oil. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of two Hindus who don't eat meat and one non-Hindu vegetarian. Attorney Harish Bharti requested the case be certified as a class action on behalf of vegetarians who ate McDonald's fries after 1990 in the belief that they contained no meat. The lawsuit says McDonald's used beef tallow in the cooking process, disguising it as "natural flavor". The fast-food chain said in a statement yesterday that it never claimed fries sold in the United States were vegetarian. McDonalds said it adds a small amount of beef extract, but it said no beef or pork flavorings are used in vegetarian menu items in India and other countries where such meat is shunned for religious reasons.

 

Any ideas on what we can do to help this?

To whom it may concer,

 

It is obvious that McD's famous fries are good for a reason, as a child I

love them too. I don't think it is fair to ask them to change their way of

cooking just because some of us don't eat beef. What about the rest of the

satisfied customers that's plenty happy of what they are getting. If you

really can't stand it, just don't go to McD's why not bake your own fries at

home.

It is pretty scary that we would sue at a drop of a hat, what is this world

coming to?

*hint, if you can taste fat, then pretty much it has fat... pretty simple.

I thought this would be interesting. After writing my concern s to

McDonalds, I wandered into this site, where McDonaldsg ets their information

on " humane slaughter " (how those two words mix I have no idea.)

 

You can check this out on www.meatami.com. Icopiedthis directly from the

site. This is what we are folks, according to the meat industry. (Is Redbook

qualified to do scientific studies?)

Despite the many strong beliefs held by vegetarians, a _(year)__ survey by

Vegetarian Times Magazine, self-proclaimed vegetarians eat only __ less

meat, poultry and fish than do proclaimed carnivores.

A recent Roper Poll conducted for the Vegetarian Resource Group showed that

although between three and seven percent of Americans consider themselves to

be vegetarians, those shunning meat, fish and poultry is between .3 and one

percent of Americans.

 

 

The American Dietetic Association has said that while a vegetarian diet can

be healthy, vegetarians, and especially vegans, must be vigilant in

balancing their diets. Vegetarian diets for growing children and pregnant

women require special levels of attention to ensure that

nutrition deficiencies do not result. The Surgeon General has affirmed the

important role that lean meat plays in the diet and has recommended two to

three, three-ounce servings per day. (this is me breaking in here,

ahem...WHAT!!! Per DAY!!!) To quote a 1993 Redbook article, nutritionally

speaking, " Meat packs a wallop. " It provides abundant amounts of crucial

vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, iron and

zinc. While many plants are rich in vitamins and minerals, their resources

are not readily absorbed by the body like they are from meat.

 

Meat and poultry also are important for children. According to Helen Bishop

McDonald, R.D., a nutritional consultant and lecturer at the University of

Calgary, children over two should get two to three servings of protein foods

per day. " Kids' stomachs are so small it can be hard for them to eat enough

to get all the vitamins and minerals they require. That's why they need

nutrient-dense foods like meat. " (Redbook, March 1993).

Fact Sheet: Products Derived From Animals

Few people comprehend the important role that animal by-products play in

their daily lives. In addition to being a major source of good nutrition for

98 percent of Americans, cattle, hogs and sheep by-products contribute to

many commonly used products.

Medical and Social Benefits of Cattle

Adrenal Glands: Epinephrine is used to relieve some symptoms of hay fever,

asthma and someallergies. It is also used as a heart stimulant in some

crisis situations, and by dentists to prolong

the effect of local anesthetics.

Blood: Thrombin form cattle blood helps blood clotting, and is valuable in

treating wounds to inaccessible parts of the body. It is also used in skin

grafting.

Pancreas: Perhaps the best known contribution, insulin derived form cattle

pancreas, is used to treat diabetes. Glucagon helps counteract insulin

Medical and Social Benefits of Swine

Heart: Valves from young to full grown hogs are used in valve replacement

surgery in humans, from infancy to old age. They are in some cases superior

to mechanical valves because they don't stick and do not need the same level

of anti-coagulant infusion. In the last 12 years, 250,000 lives have been

saved through implantation of swine heart valves.

Skin: Due to its similarity human skin, pigskin is used to treat massive

burns and large accidental skin removal. Gelatin is used for capsules and

pills. Medical products from hog production include cortisone,

norepinephrine, plasmin, blood fibrin, heart valves, estrogen, relaxin,

insulin, burn dressings, pepsin and oxytocin.

Other product contributions using swine by-products include glue,

fertilizer, floor wax, matches, crayons/chalk, rubber, and fabric printing

and dying.

That's not the problem. The problem is that they lied about changing the

recipe.

You are right what is not fair is that they misled people. I am veg and have

eaten their fries here in Qatar, Middle East. But I never detected any 'odd'

flavour. Could any of you detect it?

 

McDonalds in India have denied using any beef flavoring or fat at all in

their product offering in India stating that what is served in India is

different from what is served in the rest of the world. Incidentally McD do

not serve beef in India in deference to the Hindu sentiments.

I do remember when McD announced, and heavily marketed, that they were switching their oils. I do not really remember them ever claiming they were totally vegetarian. Did they in fact ever claim that?

All this about McD's. . . well, we can't eat there because my son is allergic to corn and their oil has corn in it, and everything else has something he's allergic to. I don't think there's a single fast food restaurant that doesn't have corn, wheat or vinegar in everything. We only know of one restaurant we can eat at.

 

The thing that is interesting to me is that the phrase "natural flavoring" can contain anything from a living source. I'm sure you all know that one "natural" red food coloring is made from a cockroach shell. Most "natural flavorings" contain corn products, because corn is cheap, so anything for us that has "natural" is usually a red flag that it is inedible for us!

 

There is a bill in congress RIGHT NOW to require manufacturers to state the source of their "natural flavors." I don't have the bill number with me right now, but if you go to their website you can find it.

 

This is a great time to get active about this and make them accountable for all of us who can't eat certain things and want some control over what we put in our bodies! Don't complain, do something about it!
