Guest guest
Hi! I just became a vegetarian and I'm new to the group. Can anyone tell me which cultures and/or ethnic bachgrounds are primarily vegetarian? I want to do more than cook and eat veggie versions of dishes that usually contain meat. I know that there are probably thousands of delicious vegetarian meals to be made . I especially like exotic and spicy foods. Also, can anyone recommend a few great cookboks? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Karen, You asked which cultures and/or ethnic backgrounds are primarily vegetarian. The obvious (to me) answer to that is Indian. Over 80 % of the people in India are vegetarian. Also, in most countries that aren't 'Westernised', meat is eaten very rarely, as it is simply too expensive. Favourite cookbooks of mine are : The Vegetarian Epicure by Anne Thomas The Vegetarian Table series, published by Chronicle Books, with books on America, France, Italy, Mexico, North Africa, India, and I think Thailand A series of books by Troth Wells, published by New Internationalist. Vegetarian titles include : 'The World in Your Kitchen : Vegetarian Recipes from Africa, Asia, the caribbean and Latin America and the Middle East for Western Kitchens' and 'Quick & Easy : Vegetarian recipes from around the world' I hope this is of some help to you, Greetings, Esther
Guest guest
Hello, Another good Vegetarian cookbook author is Nava Atlas. Her web site is Vegkitchen.com (I think that is it). She has great cookbooks and great recipes on her web site. Another culture that has a lot of vegetarian food is Middle Eastern. They have a lot of salads and dips that don't have meat.
