Guest guest
Thanks Tammi for the warm welcome and info. I am still learning what to keep on hand. What do all of you keep in your pantries? So far I have some olive oil ak mak and hummus, lettuce, veggies from my garden, soy milk (I like the vanilla), whole wheat flour and something called Nasi (rice, carrots, snow peas) that I buy at Trader Joes. I had to laugh about the chicken because now I too do not worry about defrosting -- NOW I don't have all the ingredients. Thanks Robyn in So.CA --- Tammi <jatafox wrote: > > Robyn- I am new to the veggie world, too! Guest guest
Robyn, My standbys are tofu, tempeh, and frozen stir fry vegetables. I like just the plain vegetables and add my on seasnonings. It only takes about 15 minutes to go from freezer to plate. Whole grain crackers to go with the hummus are also handy. Guest guest
Walter, thanks. I love hummus. But I bought a container of tofu and it sits there and stares at me as if I should know what to do with it. It is very intimidating. I have heard of it being frozen or marinated. Do you do anything to it or just cut it up and throw it in. I'm guessing it would take on the flavors of the seasoning. Guest guest
I also keep a jar of pesto, several kinds of rice and pasta, cans of beans, cans of vegetable broth (substitute when you see chicken broth and you can still make some of your favorite recipes), and frozen veggies. Guest guest
I just cook for myself because my boyfriend cooks his own food. His tastes & mine are frequently different. So I probably keep wierd stuff around since I just cook for myself. I keep brown rice, pasta, frozen hash browns, several kinds of cheese, black & green olives, pickles, soups, evaporated fat-free milk to replace cream, onions, garlic, peanut butter, cereal (I like the new Special K with strawberries & others), veggies for a salad or to dip in dressing, tortillas & english muffins, Gimme Lean ground beef replacement, fake bacon chips for salad, frozen stuff (or carry out ) for nights I don't want to deal with it, frozen juice bars, tortilla chips & salsa or cheese dip, crackers, fake lunchmeat, potatoes & various other things when they're in season, like avocados & summer fruit. That's probably way more than you wanted to know! Vicki walt17jr wrote: Robyn, My standbys are tofu, tempeh, and frozen stir fry vegetables. Guest guest
Mostly I just cube tofu and add it to what ever stir fry I am doing. But it is also good warmed with salsa or barbecue sauce. The flavor isn't overpowering so it will go with just about anything you like. I have eaten it plain, but wouldn't recommend that until you get used to it. Some people think the texture is better after it has been frozen. Walter , One Traveler <one_travelerr> wrote: > Walter, thanks. I love hummus. Guest guest
I now have my grocery list for next week. Thanks Vicki and Thanks everyone for your pantry lists; this has given me a good idea of all the good things that are out there to eat. Tonight I took meatless " meatballs " , added a little spagetti sauce and served it in 6 in French Rolls. My husband loves meatball sandwhiches and said these were great. Slowly, we are getting somewhere. Just where hasn't been determined yet! Robyn Vicki wrote: So I > probably keep wierd stuff > around since I just cook for myself.
