Guest guest
Well, Hi, I'm Sarah and our family is kind of thinking of going vegetarian but first I need to know what to prepare! So I don't have any recipes to share but I've been enjoying the volume of email so far I'm really interested in TVP recipes though I'm having a hard time finding any! Anyway, thanks Sarah - " Moderator " <-owner > <anschris Monday, January 07, 2002 7:50 PM Welcome to > > Hello, > > Welcome to the list. Guest guest
We use TVP usually in tomato sauce or to make meatloaf. I get it from the Mail order catalog for healthy eating. I buy it in a 5 lb package. You can also find crumbles made by Morningstar and I think Green Giant. - " Sarah " <anschris Friday, January 11, 2002 12:18 PM Re: Welcome to > Well, Hi, I'm Sarah and our family is kind of thinking of going vegetarian > but first I need to know what to prepare! Guest guest
Hi, Sarah, Most recipes that call for ground beef that is cooked, can be replaced with seasoned TVP. I try to rehydrate it in a good tasting broth, instead of water. Of course, if the recipe depends on the ground beef holding a shape, like meat loaf or hamburger patties, TVP won't work. It is good in Spaghetti, and CHili and other things that have a lot of seasoning. Good luck in your quest. Carol

Guest guest
TVP is Textured Vegetable Protein which is dehydrated granules, and has almost no flavor. When rehydrated in liquid, it has approx. the texture of cooked hamburger, but has no fat in it. You basically season it like you want it to taste. It is a good substitute in CHili and Spaghetti, or other spicy things that you would put cooked ground meat in. It is pretty economical, and gives you protein in the dishes you use it in. Guest guest
Hi Carol Actually TVP can be used to make burgers and patties as well. Vegie Burgers 1 cup TVP 1 cup boiling water 1 medium onion (finely chopped) 1 medium carrot (grated) 1 small zucchini (grated) 130g can corn kernels (drained) 1/2 teaspoon Italian herbs 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup dry bread crumbs 2 eggs (lightly beaten) 1/2 cup plain wholemeal flour 1 tablespoon oil Place TVP in a bowl. Add the boiling water and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Rinse and drain well. Add the remaining ingredients, except the flour and oil, and mix together well. Divide into 12 equal portions, using a 1/4 cup measure, and shape into burgers. Toss the burgers in flour. Heat the oil on a barbecue on in a frying pan and cook the burgers over a gentle heat until golden on both sides. Serve in rolls with a selection of salad and tomato sauce. You can also shape the TVP into "meatballs" for Italian style dishes etc. OM Shanti Rakinanandaa Golden Lotus Yoga SchoolPH: 08 9344 5065Email: goldenlotus9Web: www.geocities.com/rakini_99 Swami Anandakapila Saraswati's Teacher RegisterWeb: www.geocities.com/anandakapila/ Friends in Yoga Email: friendsinyogaWeb: www.geocities.com/friendsinyoga - caroltreehugger Saturday, January 12, 2002 3:45 AM Re: Re: Welcome to Hi, Sarah,Most recipes that call for ground beef that is cooked, can be replacedwith seasoned TVP. Guest guest
Thanks., I have been cooking with TVP for about 20 years now. I know it can be used in making patties, etc. but I was trying to describe it. I knew someone who tried to make patties out of it and water to put on the bar-b-que one time, and without other things it won't stick together. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. I was speaking about texture. I use it sometimes, but I like to make and grind my own gluten. I recently made some in bar-be-que sauce in chunks for using on skewers for Shish-ka-bobs. It was really good. Any time we can cook things that are enjoyed by dyed-in-the-wool carnivores, we are doing great!!!! Hugs to all, Carol PS. The recipe you sent in looks really good!!!! Guest guest
Hi Carol Sorry for any misunderstanding! The recipe comes from a book put out by the Sanitarium food company - they are based in New Zealand, and run by the Seventh Day Adventist Church (members of this church are vegetarians). Not sure if their products are available in the US, but they make a range of stuff including soy products, TVP, and tinned lentils, and tender chunks (moist gluten suitable for kebabs etc). Attaching a link to their website, which has a recipes section, and even if their products are not available any similar product would work! http://www.mynutritionist.sanitarium.com.au/ OM Shanti Rakinanandaa Golden Lotus Yoga SchoolPH: 08 9344 5065Email: goldenlotus9Web: www.geocities.com/rakini_99 Swami Anandakapila Saraswati's Teacher RegisterWeb: www.geocities.com/anandakapila/ Friends in Yoga Email: friendsinyogaWeb: www.geocities.com/friendsinyoga - caroltreehugger Saturday, January 12, 2002 10:06 AM Re: Re: Welcome to Thanks., I have been cooking with TVP for about 20 years now. Guest guest
Thank you so much!!!! I appreciate it, really. My mom runs a vegetarian store in the basement of an SDA church. I have gotten lots of good stuff from there. They have some really good frozen things too, made by Worthington, Cedar Lake, and Loma Linda. I have lots of internet friends in Australia, and they say they get different products there. For any of you girls in the US, you might check and see if you have an Adventist Book Store (ABC) in your area. They have many vegetarian products. GOod eating. Guest guest
Can you find TVP in a regular grocery store, and if so, where? Or do you have to go to a health foods store (like Whole Foods)? Guest guest
Hi Carol I really love the Sanitarium products, and often use them in cooking. Where I am in Australia (Perth, West Aust) we have quite a few vegetarian restaurants. There are a couple of chinese/asian style ones that use the "fake" meat dishes. We are also blessed to have the internationally known Hare Krishna cook Kurma living here. He conducts cooking classes, so am hoping to get to one in near future. Guest guest
Moderator Welcome, please send some sort of introduction, no need to be long winded, just a short hello to let us know you are here and let us know if you have any specific types of recipes you are looking for. ********** Hi there! I just joined the list. My name is Christy. My husband and I have been vegetarians since last April. We started out as vegans, but after about 6 months, our hair started falling out. We knew that the vegan lifestyle required more food planning to not be harmful, and we didn't have time for that. So we have switched to a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. We still feel very new to this lifestyle, and we've had trouble planning meatless meals, since that's all we've known. We don't know much about cooking with tofu, TVP, etc., so we've mainly chosen meat substitutes like Boca and Morningstar stuff, but they're so expensive! We'd like to find a more frugal way to cook, so I'm looking forward to hearing from the group. Beginner step-by-step suggestions would be most welcome ! And since we both work, we like things quick Christy in Oklahoma

The members are knowledgable and share great ideas. Which side of PA are you from? Originally I was from the Pittsburgh area. Happy eating. Guest guest
Hello, all! I'm Katy in Houston, TX--an 80% vegetarian. That is, I keep vegetarian 80% of the time, but still eat a bit of chicken or seafood when it's the more practical alternative (parties, toddler-friendly restaurants, etc.) Right now my obsession is fixing tofu and veggies in ways that my husband, lover of bacon, steak and all things fried, will eat. (Caravelle's Sweet Chili Sauce works as a nice marinade for julienned tofu for hand rolls!) Looking forward to lots of great recipes and tricks! Being a Beatles fan, and particularly a Paul McCartney fan, I'm more interested in a vegetarian lifestyle. I'm not totally veggie...still eat chicken and fish, but would like to give up meat altogether. I went totally veggie ffor awhile a few years ago and really did feel a lot better. Would like to again. Since a lot of PM fans are veggie, it makes it a lot easier and you get lots of support. Oh, to the moderator...I'm not receiving messages by mail, even though I'm signed up for individual messages. Any idea what the problem could be? I can access the site okay and am replying from there. I might try unsubbing, then resubbing. Sometimes that works. Luv, Jeannie

Guest guest
Hello! Thank you for your warm welcome. I've been a vegetarian off and on for a number of years (most recently off, but now back on as of March 2002.) I'm the only vegetarian in my family. I am interested in recipes that can be converted " down " and don't mean three weeks of leftovers! I also work full-time and don't have a lot of time or patience for lengthy lists of ingredients. So, SIMPLE, QUICK, and CHEAP would be great recipe categories for me! Talk to you soon!
