Guest guest
Hi all No by mincemeat I don't mean animal protein! I mean the sweet, spicy, fruity pie filling common at christmas in the UK. Has anyone a recipe? Traditionally I know it contained beef suet, but there's plenty of alternatives! Guest guest
It's a variation on the traditional mincemeat recipe, give me a few days of pouring through some of my mum's cookery books and I can probably find the traditional recipe.. but for now! Honey & Lemon Spicy Mincemeat Makes: 1.5KG/3Lb Ingredients 150g/ 6 oz /1 cup vegetarian shredded suet 225g/ 8 oz /1½ cups currants 1 large cooking apple, coarsley grated grated rind of 2 lemons grated rind and juice of 1 orange 115g/ 4 oz /¾ cup no-need-to-soak prunes, chopped 115g/ 4 oz /¾ cup stoned dates, chopped 150g/ 6 oz /1 cup rasins 225g/ 8 oz /1½ cups sultanas 115g/ 4 oz /¾ cup flaked almonds 90ml/ 6 tbsp clear honey 60ml/ 4 tbsp brandy or rum 5ml/ 1 tsp mixed spice 2.5ml/ ½tsp ground cloves or all-spice Method 1. Mix all the ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Cover and store in a cool place for 2 days, stiring the mixture occasionally. 2. Sterilize clean jam jars by placing them in a warm oven for 30 minutes. Cool, then fill with mincemeat, and seal with wax discs and screw tops. Label and store until required. Guest guest
It's a vegetarian alternative to animal suet, lard, or drippings.. I'm not 100% sure how to explain it. http://www.atora.com/aboutus/index.htm Here is a link to the brand that we use, we have the light version as they do both beggie and non veggie versions. Hope this helps, Az - Melonzz Tuesday, November 13, 2001 2:40 PM Re: Mincemeat At 02:33 PM 11/13/2001 +0000, Azlea Morgan wrote:>Ingredients>150g/ 6 oz /1 cup vegetarian shredded suetPlease, what is vegetarian suet? Did anyone find a US substitute for this? I contacted Atora today and was advised that they do not export to the US. Thank you, S
