Guest guest
I found the reason mine was so horrible is because I didn't get the water out. It was just the soggy gross mushy stuff. The basics are to press it between 2 towels with a weight on it for about 1/2 hr. on until the moisture is mostly out. Then just marinade in whatever you want (dressing or marinade), saute it in the skillet & add whatever veggies you want. Or you can saute the veggies first (take them out before putting the tofu in) so the flavors are left in the skillet & saute the tofu in that. moonflyerus wrote: can anyone give me any hints on how to prepare Tofu. Every time I try to make something with Tofu it is horrible, but when I go out to eat it is great. There are never directions on the box. Do you need to get the water in the container drained off and if so how do you do that? Does anyone know of any books that tell how to prepare Tofu aside from draining it, i found that if i freeze it first, its easier to deal with, and kind of tougher (which i like better than the mush). jocelyn
Guest guest
Different brands start out with different textures. You might try different brands and see if it makes a difference. Guest guest
Yes, draining is really important, though I don't usually press it. I like grating it and sauteing very slowly in oil til it's firm and slightly golden, then adding taco seasoning and water for great tacos. Also, I cut them into strips or cubes, roll them in various marinades, sauces and BBQ sauces, then bake in a well-oiled pan til chewy. Check your library for tofu and vegetarian cookbooks that deal with tofu. The classic book is The Book of Tofu by Shurtleff and Aoyagi (how can you tell the book was beside me). If you get Sunrise tofu in your area, you may be able to get one of their excellent little and cheap cookbooks in the produce section of your supermarket. It is pretty weird to work with Tofu in the beginning. I kept expecting it to have flavor, which of course it doesn't. The key is in Giving it the flavor you want. Once you've got that, you've got it licked. Have fun. Donni - <moonflyerus Saturday, November 17, 2001 12:58 PM Tofu Preparation > can anyone give me any hints on how to prepare Tofu. Guest guest
i remember trying to use this a long time ago and i gave up too. i was also told to drain the water everyday and put fresh water on the unused portions each day after it was opened. is this still true? donna ______________________ Message: 1 Sat, 17 Nov 2001 20:58:44 -0000 moonflyerus Tofu Preparation can anyone give me any hints on how to prepare Tofu. Guest guest
Yes, you are supposed to change the water everyday My favorite way to prepare tofu(not healthy but goo) drain tofu, get as much water out as you can fry in well oiled pan. Prepare your favorite chicken wing sauce-I use BBQ suace, some margarine, and hot sauce, and some water Place on cookie sheet-cover with sauce and bake till sauce is no longer runny and they look done. THey should be shiny and crispy:) Julie
