I am forwarding information on a new virus that is doing the rounds - it does not even need you to open the attachment to end up in your system. As well as the one that is mentioned in this mail, there are others including one called W32.Aliz.Worm virus that I received twice yesterday. It also has an attachment, but will get into system without opening it. I got it just trying to delete the message, and luckily it was detected by my anti-virus programme immediately.

 

The message here is that you need to keep your virus definitions updated and run regular scans of the whole computer, and never open any attachments unless you are certain they are from a trusted source.

Pay attention to this one, Folks! This one does NOT require you to open the attachment, just by receiving the mail you can get infected.

 

I've included links along with the original mail I received. The links will take you to the white papers on this virus, Norton for their information on the virus and how to detect and fix, and to McAfee who does have a .dat file available for retail users. Now I'm about to put my poor clunker here through the scan to make sure it's not already infected.

 

I hate people who have nothing better to do then to play nasty games with people they don't even know. Grrrrr....

If you receive empty or blank email messages, look up to the headers in the email and see if the FROM or SENDER field's email address begins with an underscore. If it does and the email is blank, you have the BADTRANS virus.

 

This virus is automatically activated when it hits your system. You do not have to even open an email, nevermind an attachment, for it to activate.

 

I hope and pray everyone is using virus software. I can't tell you how many messages I have received over the last few days that are blank with the email address starting with an underscore.

 

If you happen to use Outlook or Outlook Express you are exceptionally vulnerable to the BADTRANS virus because it can damage your system files. If you use Eudora, the most you will get is a blank email message and no damage to your system files.
