dog food - I would LOVE pet food recipes

I would LOVE to have recipes for dog food (or cat food)!! I'm sure others

would too; I dont think anyone would have a problem with them being posted

here once, rather than you having to send individual emails. I think many

health conscious people with pets also want their pets to eat well - should

anyway. Like we say on my other group: Read the subject line; if it doesn't

interest you, delete it LOL

My plight with pet food started after I almost lost one of my girls to liver

damage of an " unknown origin " . Even though she is a " toy " breed, she had

been very healthy and quite muscular for her size (her best 4-legged friend

is our German Shepherd and they grew up together and play HARD). When she

got sick, my vet said she must have gotten into something toxic, but we

turned the house upside down and inside out and the most " toxic " thing Tobi

would have eaten was the contents of the litter box!!! LOL To make a long

story short, she got better and I got lax. When she got sick again, she was

totally jaundiced and her liver was almost non functional. About that time I

accidentally stumbled across an article about what all kinds of poison go

into the very same foods I have been feeding both dogs and our 3 cats. It

really SCARED me!!! I gathered up every morsel of pet food in the house and

put it in the trash - of course, while my 5 little girls stood around like

" what are we going to eat NOW?? " All I could do is hold them and cry; I

felt like I had been poisoning my babies!! Unfortunately, being unemployed,

I cannot afford the best & really expensive pet foods, but I do my best & try

to feed myself and my hubby cheaply to compensate. My canine girls love my

gruel, but they do get tired of the same ol thing. One cat goes NUTS for it;

the other 2 need more variety. And my hubby wont eat in the house while I

cooking it, or after. I know I need to do better by them than I am, so any

recipes & food tips would certainly be appreciated!! I try to get them to

eat fresh fruits and veggies - someone recommended grapes, so I bought LOTS

on sale - and the cats think they are toys, the dogs dont know what to think.

Of course, Tobi is now on a daily dose of Milk Thistle (my vet consulted

with a nutritionist to get the right " doggie dosage " ), something I would

HIGHLY recommend to anyone who has pets that have been eating Purina, etc.

It really isn't that expensive and is readily available with other herbal

supplements.

I have a couple of recipes, but not much variety, and no veg ones. I was

using organ meats mixed with all the other " stuff " , but after almost burning

my house down one night with a pot on the stove that just happened to have

pork liver in it (cooking their " gruel " at 3 a.m.), I cant bring myself to do

it too much anymore. Dont know if anyone has ever inhaled the stench and

smoke from pork liver, but you wont soon forget it. Even after several

months, I still think I smell it at times!! LOL Of course, NO pork liver

will EVER cross this threshold again!!

So, now that you know what a horribly negligent " mom " I am, any help you

could send my way my girls will be most grateful!! LOL

Thanks,

Vivian

Vivian I don't know who you're replying to but I posted the recipe for

Frosty Paws, but it's a treat, not regular food. I applaud you for doing

the best for your furkids. I am attaching the Whole Dog Journal's list

of top 10 foods plus the list of ingredients in dog food & what they

are. I have researched dog food for 15 yrs. now & I concur with them.

If you cut the grapes in half, they are less likely to play with

them. I

don't know why, but this seems to work for us!
