Guest guest
Oh Chanda, you're not nuts at all! I've heard of all kinds of people who keep their hens indoors during the winter. But if you have the space and it sounds like it, you could also create a year round house for them outside. Here are a few sites for you and anyone else interested in raising their own chickens. http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/ - check out their books section, some good reading. http://www.gatewaytovermont.com/thefarm/chickens.htm - a personal story of a Vermont farm (small) http://www.pathtofreedom.com/pathproject/simpleliving/chickens.shtml - Chickens in the city I can't wait to get our chicks next year! Guest guest
thanks. I don't have the money to do the all year round house outside. I wonder if hens sleep the same hours as we do, or if they would keep my sons up all night, LOL. blessings, Chanda - " organic_homestead " <organic_homestead Thursday, September 15, 2005 2:15 PM Re: Chanda?? eggs?? chickens?? > Oh Chanda, you're not nuts at all! Guest guest
Poultry will go to bed at dusk and sleep until dawn. They do make sweet little noises as they sleep, though; like cooing or trilling. My Guinea fowl make the sweetest little twittering noises when they sleep. Guest guest
Actually, that's not completely true, but what will/might happen is one of the hens will take the place of a rooster and become more " masculine. " Some of them have actually been known to try to crow at the crack of dawn. So, perhaps one of your hens might stop producing but not all of them. A fun and funny book to read, which will really make you want to have some hens: Hen and the Art of Chicken Maintenance : Reflections on Raising Chickens by Martin Gurdon Denise , " PuterWitch " <puterwitch@c...> wrote: > LOL, I Know, and I heard that some hens won't lay eggs if there is no rooster around.
