Chanda,

I wish I had advice to give : ). rhubarb grows as a

weed here and it was here when we bought the house. a

family from church offered their patch of rhubarb for

digging up--I may do that this fall as we really like

it. we planted 2 tomato plants-ended up with 10 or 12

with volunteers from last year. green peppers did well

this year unlike last year. raspberries we got this

past spring from a lady who advertised free raspberry

canes for pickup. we did nothing other than plant

bare-looking " sticks " and the raspberry canes are as

tall as me at 5'7 " : ). we only got a handful of

berries this year but expect lots more next year. I

think we might have had more but between birds and

neighbor boys berries were sparse : ). the lady we had

gotten the rapsberries from also gave us 12 wild plum

seedlings but they never took off. I may try it again

though as I learn more about gardening.

I need to find a somewhat of a gardening expert. I

have no idea if raspberries need to be trimmed down as

they are HUGE and when I am supposed to cut back our

roses. The red ones are climbing quickly up the side

of our house. I may just call my grandpa and ask him.

He might have some apples for sauce and pears ready to

go. I can also get a bunch of spring onions from him

to plant--he loves to share what he has : ). I like

green onions but hate buying them in the store : ). So

many plans--not enough knowledge : ). We didn't do

anything special other than lay down dried rabbit

droppings and weed well. So I definitely don't know

much : ). Anyone have extensive gardening

know-how??????

Most of my gardening know-how is from years of just doing it and trial

and error. Some things grow, some struggle and some I keep trying in

different areas.

I have found a lot of good information online and read lots of

different books, magazines etc. One great book I got last Christmas

is: The Vegetable Gardener's Bible: Discover Ed's High-Yield W-O-R-D

System for All North American Gardening Regions by Edward C. Smith

It really helped me in this year's garden.

I know Earl May isn't the best gardening resource, but they do have

some helpful pamphlets. They have one for raspberries and talk about

the different type of pruning you need to do and when. Check out their

website, you might be able to get find it there.

I wonder, along this line of conversation, if anybody has successfully grown vegies in containers? We are shortly to move to a new apartment that has a spacious screened porch/patio, and I am thinking seriously of trying to grow 'maters, peppers, and such like in big pots.

Thanks for any help--

Bron, I have grown some but this was only my second summer attempting

it, and it was quite disrupted by the move, which I knew about, so I

only planted herbs this year. But last year I had tomatoes & peppers.

Be careful which varieties you get, as the plants I picked up at the

local Home Dpot were more tolerant of cooler areas than Jax was! They

didn't do well at all. I planted some others though, and got

tomatoes... if you eat eggs, crush your egg shells and put them in the

dirt around th tomatoes, as well as coffee grounds/leftover coffee.

Peppers liked the direct sun better than the tomatoes, but that was in

FL where direct sun last many hours a day, so you'll have to

experiment with it.

I don't know if this true, but it seemed to me that if the porch was

screened, it was hard for pollinators to get in... so I did some

flower shaking, on recommendations for the organichomesteading list.

I think the conversation actually started a bit ago with container

crops, and I had recommended a book (not entirely organic butlots of

great info) Bountiful Container, which I have, and posted about

another that also had high reviews at Amazon, that I hope to get. Here

are the links again so you don't have to search...

McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container (5 stars in the reviews on Amazon)

This one also has a high rating (4 1/2 stars), and I would like to get

it as well someday:
