Guest guest
I usually make my own stuffing with homemade bread and veggies, along with many fruit and veggie side dishes, and pumpkin and pecan pie. Do you use a meat substitute for the main course or just make lots of good dishes and do buffet style? I was thinking of making a seitan loaf - any tips? Anyway - I've been so excited!! Going on week 3 of being a vegetarian. I have been experimenting with my baked goods - making them vegan - so far the kids love the vegan brownies and vegan apple crisp. I made a banana cream pie that was good, but the crust was a bit bland. Now that I found soy margarine sticks I will try my regular recipe again. (I own a dessert mail order company so desserts are my life - lol) The fun part comes when hubby gets in from work (he works off shore). He's was a skeptic about switching to natural cleaning products, vegan hair shampoo, olive oil soap and organic produce a few months ago. Now I have to gently persuade him to eat my tofu fetticine alfredo - which was good by the way. Cara
Guest guest
My husband and I were pretty impressed by the UnTurkey loaf. It has a nice skin on it and everything. I believe it's made of gluten as well as other things. One tip I would give you is that the gravy it comes with is pretty salty. We made our own from a recipe I found online somewhere that was better. What I love about Thanksgiving is the buffet-ness aspect. Even with no turkey substitute, there seems to always be plenty to eat. Mmmm... my mouth is watering just thinking about it! -Craige On 10/16/05, casonnier <casonnier wrote: > > I usually make my own stuffing with homemade bread and veggies, > along with many fruit and veggie side dishes, and pumpkin and pecan > pie. > > Do you use a meat substitute for the main course or just make lots > of good dishes and do buffet style? Guest guest
James and I LOVE the Quorn turky loaf. Yeah it's tubular, but cooking it with rosemary is divine and it makes the best left over turky sandwiches! We also make at least one side dish and I made veggie gravy. When we have T-day with my family, luckily they don't tend to desicrate the veggies with bits of meat. And we stay away from my sister's in-laws jello salads, which I have never liked. The only thing I miss that had jello in it was my mom's trifle. Guest guest
I never make a turkey substitute. If we're home, my DH doesn't miss it. When his family comes, his mom will bring a turkey (one that's already cooked and just needs to be heated). In either case, I usually make a fancy stuffed squash that we can cut into wedges, sorta like carving the bird.

Guest guest
Yeah, Jenni, could you make me some trifle and tell me how it turns out?!LOL With all this talk about agar, I ought to get some and experiment. I don't even know what it looks like. Is it a powder? Oh, I'll Google it and I believe some folks here had posted links. It is getting to be that time of year when I start looking forward to all the delights my mom would make. I've turned many of them into veggie versions and you can't even tell. I know this may be odd to say, but one good thing about the mad cow problem in England is that now you can get everything vegetarian, they've completely stopped putting beef suet in things (kind of like us Americans putting gelatin in everything). d , " Amy " <sandpiperhiker> wrote: > > > The only thing I miss that had jello in it was my mom's trifle. > > I bet you could make that with agar (or Jenni could!) >

Guest guest
Denise - agar comes in powder, bar or flake. Also known as kanten. POwder is probably easiest.

Guest guest
My daughter and I usually have the tofurkey, since my daughter does not like the stuffing that is usually in it we cut it open and take the stuffing out. Last year we took some red skinned potatoes and made mashed potatoes out if it as put that inside. Another year my husband who is not vegetarian took the stuffing out and made up a stuffing using canned pumpkin. Then we season the outside and bake it up. Since Thanksgiving is usually just the 4 of us we then make up some kind of a vegetable and 1 kind of potato. Gayle
