Guest guest
--- Bron, I make regular dairy plain yogurt at home. I picked up the cultures at one of our small healthfood stores and make it at home on mason jars with a heating pad : ). I have a hard time finding yogurt without gelatin or weird ingredients and the only soy yogurt around is flavored. I really prefer plain unsweetened stuff but the cheapest brand of organic dairy yougurt is $4/quart and I make the same amount for 90 cents I think plus I don't need any thickeners. most everything else I eat is vegan--I haven't had much luck using soymilk to make yogurt so I compromise a bit here. take care : )................. Guest guest
Okay, Anne, thank you for the information. My dh has very bad reactions to dairy with his ADHD, and as a diabetic, I do also, so I don't think I'll go that route. But it's nice to know you can, anyway. :>) Bron On 11/9/05, jandemommy <jandemommy wrote: > > --- Bron, > > I make regular dairy plain yogurt at home. Guest guest
--- Bron, her address is bryannaclarkgrogan.com . her subscription is $17/year but it is fantastic and totally vegan. it is cheaper than a cookbook but more comprehensive than one : ). she has a TON of freebie stuff on her website to look at including making soy yogurt : ). while not fully vegan yet myself in all things, her recipes are very inspiring to get there : ). she uses a lot of staple ingredients to make a large amount of stuff. some of her recipes I have copied down are: tofu mayo (tastes like Vegannaise), vegan baking mix, vegan ranch dressing, assorted " cheeses " , tons of whole-grain breads, casseroles with vegan white sauces, tofu ricotta, tofu sour cream (close to Tofutti), baked goods, pies, soups, dips, soy hot cocoa, burgers, etc. she also gives suppliers of products in US and Canada and many cool articles/tidbits cooking history. I have the current issue and 12 or 13 more to dig through : ). each issue, especially older ones are 40+ pages in PDF format. there is just a ton of good stuff : ). the only drawback for me is there isn't enough time to do it all. 2 recipes I am doing this weekend of hers that look fantastic are Bryanna's Southern Sweet Potato Salad (for supper tonight with sandwiches) and Bryanna's Cheesy Vegan Spinach & Artichoke Casserole tomorrow. have fun looking : )....... Guest guest
HI Bron: I would think you make soy hot cocoa the same way you would make dairy hot cocoa only using soy milk. Gayle
Guest guest
Yep, Gayle, you're absotively, posolutely correct about that! <VBG> Just made myself a big " latte " Christmas mug of hot chocolate...tastes exactly the same as with dairy milk too! And...guess what! I bought some new jeans last night, y'all, and get THIS! I have lost a WHOLE size!!!!!!! YES!!!!! And I haven't even done any walking (i.e., exercise) yet, cuz my foot's not strong enough!!! And I'd NEVER have thought I could lose any weight even being veg, because of taking insulin and insulin makes you gain weight. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy howdy, am I ever excited!!!!!! a WHOLE size! and actually it might be a size and a half because these jeans will slide off without being unzipped!!! Sorry for all the exclamation marks but I just cannot believe this is happening! Sure, I've read about it happening with other vegies, but just thought the insulin would be the inhibitor for me. But apparently, the vegies interact kindly with the insulin and invite the insulin effect to chill. <VBG> Yet another reason to go veg, for sure!!! and of course I eat as much as I want and never feel badly about it at all... Wanted to share!!! Guest guest
Hi Bron: I am glad you enjoyed the hot chocolate. That is sooo great about loosing weight while on insulin. When you check you blood sugar is it usually lower then it was before? Glad to hear you are doing well. Hope your foot is better soon. g
