Guest guest
Donna you aren't picky. I don't like beets or licorice and coconut isn't a favorite either. ~lol~ Petro Mr. Picky , Donnalilacflower <thelilacflower wrote: > > > I love all of these except of course for anchoives. > > http://food./blog/edlevineeats/22683/the-top-foods-people-love-or-hate/ > > I got a kick out of the list. > > Donna > > > Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. > Shine on you crazy diamond. > Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. > Shine on you crazy diamond. Guest guest
Most everything on that list I could not eat just for the fact being a vegan. Nothing stood out to me. Shredded dry cocunut is terrible. Opt for a fresh raw shredded coconut. I like the 80's list better. Guest guest
Irene, we are trying to grow some for the first time. They are still small and at the leafy stage, no idea if we'll get sprouts. Guest guest
When I worked in a pizza place years ago, I had to get someone to put the anchovies on when we got an order (it was rare, thankfully!). I literally gagged and had to run to the restroom the first time I tried to use them. I still can't stand them. I like most things on the list. I love black licorice, but despise red. I rarely eat it, though. Black Jelly Bellys, on the other hand, that's a small treat I get two or three times a year. My husband got me into Brussel Sprouts - you really have to cook them for a long time. Or put them in a crock pot with your stew to go all day. Then they're tasty! I've liked broccoli for years, and its a staple around our house. Hubby loves it, too. Green peppers are the devil, as far as I'm concerned. My parents tried to get me to eat them growing up, and I never would. Red, orange, and yellow are a totally different story. If you don't like green, give the other colors a chance. After all, green is just unripened, so it's no wonder it takes like funk. My husband swore he hated all peppers, but when I made a Mexican dinner and used red, orange, and yellow, he about fell out of his chair. Now he swears by red peppers, and tells everyone they are his third favorite food (next to broccoli, and meat). Tomatoes are my long-standing arch enemy. I try and try to eat them like my hubby does (raw, and off the vine), but I just can't. I had several stand-offs as a child where my parents wouldn't let me leave the table before finishing my tomatoes (you like ketchup, after all!), but I would never cave. Seriously, I would sit there for hours and tell them it was stupid. I can handle them steamed, but now that I have been eating raw, well, I will just have to be " mostly raw, " or I'll never get another tomato. I have even joked that if I ever write an autobiography, it will be called, " I Still Don't Like Tomatoes. " Most of the foods on this list you can develop a taste for if you prepare it a certain way and add it slowly to your diet - if it's worth it to do so because it's a healthy food. I refuse to learn to eat mayonnaise because I've never seen a clean study of its health benefits. I was raised on junk food and have had to retrain my taste buds over the years. I think articles like this are funny, but a little sad, and perpetuate that whole " all or nothing " mentality our society is stuck in. You really can learn to eat foods that you once didn't like. Just like going from whole milk to skim (and soon to nut milk), it can take time and effort to add healthier foods. But it is SO worth it. For those of you who are so angry at beets or brussel sprouts, maybe cooking them a different way in a new recipe might be worth it. Opening up your menu just means more great things you can cook and more great recipes. And the next time a meat-eater asks, " well, what CAN you eat? " you'll have even more things to tell them. Of course, you don't have to admit your famous crock-pot stew has brussel sprouts in it. , Donnalilacflower <thelilacflower wrote: > > > I love all of these except of course for anchoives. > > http://food./blog/edlevineeats/22683/the-top-foods-people-love-or-hate/ > > I got a kick out of the list. > > Donna > > > Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun. > Shine on you crazy diamond. > Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky. > Shine on you crazy diamond. Guest guest
I looked at this list, but don't think I hate most of these foods. Some (eggplant), I have come to LOVE...bell peppers I love when ripe, RED (or orange or yellow), sweet and juicy, but my DH insists that only the " green " ones are the " right " kind of pepper that he will eat. (Nothing I say will convince him of the sweeter flavor of the red ones--he has it in his mind that only HOT peppers turn red!) I wouldn't know about the anchovies--I don't think I've ever had them, unless they're the same as sardines, which I HAVE tried in the past....not my favorite by any means! Personally, my " add " to this list would be " custard " . Mom gave us little ramekin bowls of individual, crust-less custard when I was very young, and, rarely also made a custard pie in a crust. I think I LIKED " custard " until one day, eating custard from a small bowl, I noticed the way I could slice into it and then it would get " watery " where the slice was...and suddenly the bland " milk-egg-and slightly vanilla " taste seemed " gross " to me--I have not liked or even felt I could stomach " custard " ever since. My DH, however, simply adores custard of any kind and BEGS me to make him a pie or a baking bowl of it. I have so far refused, since I have to LOOK at it and think about it as I make the stuff. So far, I have not been able to get past my personal gross-out with custard. (To compromise, I do make PUMPKIN custard ( " pumpkin pie " without the crust) or butternut squash custard--and he is happy with that, and so am I.) Other things that I think are either love or hate: Okra, very ripe banana, cooked blueberries (I HATE them, but love raw ones! My parents and DH think I'm the crazy one, because they love blueberries stuck into all kinds of baked goods!)...I also think PRUNES are weird, but I frankly LIKE eating them! That was an interesting article: I veered off on a couple of their other lists...interesting. I think some of the stuff from the 80's (Capri Sun, for example) rival the weird and horrible stuff I used to " love " as a kid: Tang, " Fizzies " , Marshmallow Fluff, Wax candy " LIPS " ... INSTANT (Bleah!) mashed potatoes, " Dream Whip " ... to name a few of the atrocities! One might ask the question, " Have we come any farther or are we any better off, considering what sorts of " foods " are on the market now? Give me eggplant AND Brussels sprouts and tomatoes and beans and okra and rice...and some of those other love-hate (but healthier) foods--ANY day!! Peace!
