Guest guest
Hi Susie My name is Carol. I have been veg for many years. It is very interesting that I have a 7 yo who hasn't yet been technically diagnosed with aspergers but the diagnosis has been tossed around for a little while. She became vegetarian on her own too. She never liked meat, I think it was a sensory thing, but she did eat chicken nuggets. This year she has beocme completely vegetarian. I wonder if our kids know something that others don't. She is one of the most compassionate kids I know. Carol sdw1255 wrote: Good morning! Guest guest
first amy I say CONGRATS!! on both being a veggie and for having such a great son! I am pretty new here also but found this to be a very pleasant, helpful group. one point I want to make- I also have a very compassionate child. I really believe that raising her veggie makes all of the difference. they learn to love and respect animals which is passed on to humans(which I personally find very hard at times. ok-let's be honest- MOST of the time!!). she is truly something to be proud of!! I get " wow!! she looks so healthy to be a vegetarian! " all the time. she is both mentally and physically advanced which the doctor said would never happen. well- enough about me and welcome!! cristene
Guest guest
Dear Susie It is good that your family support you. I don't have a supportive family. In fact, it has been a conflict in my family because I am a vegetarian. The worst is I hate to see them cooking and eating meat. I am hoping to find a good menu that attack my children to eat vegetarian food. regards chay loon, from Singapore - sdw1255 Friday, November 12, 2004 12:47 AM New to Group Good morning! Guest guest
Dear Susie, Welcome to the group. It sounds like you and your son and the rest of your family are finding just the right stride on this path. Congratulations for following your heart and intuition and listening to your son. Guest guest
hi all, I am another newbie to the group. Greetings to you all. I have been a vegan for around 10 years and I have a 2 year old daughter who is vegan from birth. (She is really beautiful I must say) generally her health is amazing and she seems very bright. I have had one problem though and was wondering if others had some advice. In the last few month Ruby (my daughter) has had a discoloring of a couple of her front teeth. One has even begun to what seems like rotting. I have been to a dentist and he says it is because we do not get enough flouride ( we are on tank water). I have tried at his suggestion (and against my inital beliefs) to giving her flouride toothpaste and this still has not worked. being a vegan for 10 years I have read alot about diet and the last few years alot about childrens diets. We eat mainly organic and non- processed food with almost no sugar. So I am at a deadend to think what has gone wrong. I feel like a bit of a failure and I do secretly wonder is it the food (or lack of) that I give her that has done this. Any ideas? cheers Adam Support Care2 Email: 1,400 whales may be killed this year. Take action! http://www.care2.com/go/z/17954
Guest guest
Adam, We are on well water, so my girls do not get flouride in the water supply. My girls take flouride vitamins, it's a prescription that my Pediatrician gives us. Flouride toothpaste alone is not enough. Has your pediatrician ever discussed this with you, I would ask him or her about it. Of course Flouride itself is a controversial substance. Some people think is poison. I would do some research on it before making a decision. My husband never got flouride as a kid, and he has terrible teeth. I got flouride as a child, and I have great teeth. So we made the decision to give our girls the flouride. Let us know what happens. Kelly Adam Burling <aburling wrote: hi all, I am another newbie to the group. Greetings to you all. Guest guest
Adam, I haven't had any dental issues with my son so far. He's 9 and vegan since birth. We do not use any toothpaste with floride either. I switched dentists several yrs. ago when I was sitting with my son at his cleaning and they were about to give him a floride treatment as a matter of course. I asked them what sweetener was in the gel and they couldn't give me an answer. I told them that we didn't use floride or artificial sweeteners even in toothpaste. They were shocked to find out that we didn't use the mainstream stuff. I found a holistic dentist a little farther away. He treats children and adults and does not believe in floride in toothpaste either. He discusses nutrition and other ways to prevent and deal with dental issues. He is very adamant about the floride too. You can write me off list if you like and I'm happy to get his email to you. No need to beat youself up. You are doing a good job. You might want to look at giving your child some digestive enzymes. Also I'm curious about what type of water you have in your home. That might be just one piece of the puzzle. Guest guest
My daughter has two discolored front teeth also and she was a no- flouride baby. We have since started her on flouridated toothpaste and while it hasn't fixed the discoloring she has, it has stopped it from getting any worse. , " Adam Burling " <aburling@n...> wrote: In the last few month Ruby (my daughter) has had a > discoloring of a couple of her front teeth. (snip) Addam, This happened to a friend of mine, to her daughter that is, around the same age. By the time I met them, her dd was just 2 and showing black teeth. The dentist did not blame their lack of fluoride, but did suggest they start brushing with it to prevent further decay. He was a sympathetic dentist, unlike yours, it sounds like. It more likely had to do with how the teeth were built in utero or genetics, and there's not much to be done about that. Many kids have rotten first teeth but never get so much as a cavity in their adult teeth. My own son, for what it's worth, is 5.5 yrs and having to go through a lot of dental work - a LOT - and I felt/feel horrible, too. And for us, since it started much later, I can't really blame my pregnancy diet (which was very good) - I can only blame my lack of proper dental hygiene for him, even though I preached it like a Sunday sermon. I brushed his teeth every night, but not in the am even though he'd have maple syrup on his waffles........ And I never flossed, which shows because the decay is, in many places, in the spots where two teeth touch. Anyway, so here we are, thankful for dental insurance. :-( If you start brushing with fluoride (which I *still* do not, so I'm not saying you must) you may stall the decay. Other ways to reduce the bacterial load are to have her rinse with a natural anti-bacterial mouthwash (I know Desert Essence make a tea tree oil one that's mild-tasting enough that my son can use it). There's one from The Herbalist (I assume they have a website) that's called Mouth Mend that's excellent - lots of healing and anti-bacterial herbs - goldenseal, echinacea, blah blah blah.... You can also see if she'll chew (not swallow - she may be too young still) Xylitol gum - the only vegan one out there is B Fresh (find it on the internet), and as a bonus, at least one flavor (maybe all) has a daily dose of B12 in it. I have started putting xylitol on ds's oatmeal instead of syrup. My friends, who did switch to fluoride toothpaste, have prevented further decay and their dd is about to lose her front teeth (she's 5.5 yrs). So they, unlike me, have avoided the dental work. So there's a chance that you can, too. She just won't have the prettiest smile for a few years, but, hey, she'll have her teeth - which is important for how the adult teeth grow back in. Or you may stall the decay long enough that she'll be older when she does need the dental work, and better able to tolerate it. HTH. Either way, giving flouride won't reverse what's already been done. It will only help prevent further damage, if in fact lack of flouride is the cause. If decay has already set in your daughter may require further treatment. Also keep in mind, flouride takes time to work. The flouride in toothpaste will add a tiny bit of strength to teeth during each use, but many, many uses are necessary before those little additions add up to substantial change. There are a number of substances that can cause staining. Another poster mentioned several of them. In addition to those, vitamins can sometimes cause staining, especially the liquid ones designed for babies. The staining is unsightly, but it's not dangerous. Giving your daughter flouridated bottled water as well as flouridated toothpaste may also help. Most dentists support flouridation of public water systems because surface flouride is not believed to be enough to stop tooth decay on its own. > being a vegan for 10 years I have read alot about diet and the last > few years alot about childrens diets. Lack of flouridation is a well established risk factor for decay. (Whether flouridation is worth the potential side-effects is a debate I'll let others sort out.) Tooth decay can happen to any child, even with the best hygiene, best diet, and flouridated water. Perfect care and perfect conditions can only reduce the risk, not completely eliminate it. ---- Patricia Bullington-McGuire <patricia The brilliant Cerebron, attacking the problem analytically, discovered three distinct kinds of dragon: the mythical, the chimerical, and the purely hypothetical. Guest guest
Does he like smoothies? I make smoothies for my girls all the time. Besides throwing in a bunch of fruit....I throw in nuts, whatever vitamins I think they need, flax seed oil, wheat germ, soy milk or calcium fortified orange juice....sometimes sesame seeds. I get creative and throw all kinds of things in there. They don't know the difference. As long as it tasts fruity they will drink it. I have even put the liquid b-12 in the smoothie to make sure they are getting it. Since your son has braces a smoothie would probably be a great way to get some nutrition in him. Guest guest
Wecome Cams, I have a few suggestions. Sometimes the body doesn't assimilate vitamins even though he is eating food with plenty of vitamins. You might want to try some digestive enzymes and acidophilus. Give it to him before his meals. When we evaluate clients at our wellness center we also ask what type of water they drink and how much. Also, does he eat junk food, and or processed sugar? Feel free to email me privately if you want more in depth info. Guest guest
Welcome Tanya! Tanya L [telnjml] Monday, March 28, 2005 5:08 PM New to Group Wow - you guys have a lot of threads going on at one time! I am new to group. I have three kids - 10 year old son, 6 year old daughter, and 9 month old son. I became vegetarian when my first son was about three years old, so the other two have always been vegetarian. Health and ethical and spiritual reasons all mixed together! My daughter nursed exclusively for the entire first year, and then just ate food with us. She weaned completely when she was 4 months from her fourth birthday. My baby son is nursing but eats lots of food because he wants and needs it! We live near a Whole Foods Market, where we do all of our grocery shopping. Our store is very well-kept, very friendly and helpful, clean and fresh, etc. We do have live lobsters, but I don't mind. Our meat and seafood section is way in the back. When I walk into the store I am bombarded by tons and tons of fresh fruits and veggies - yeah! Even the cheese section is in the very far back corner. We strive to be vegan, but can't be perfect! I didn't know that Kraft bought out Boca, but I have to say that it suddenly makes sense! I used to shop at Wal-mart for my in-between bread and soymilk needs (Whole Foods is an hour away, but now I have finally been able to boycott Wal-mart for good) and happened to notice that the Boca Burgers I buy at Whole Food have no hydrogenated oil in them, but the ones at Wal-mart do!!!!!!!!! By the way, I also noticed that Heinz ketchup sold in Wal-mart has a different # plastic than the one sold in Whole Foods, the Whole Foods being safer, of course. I also wanted to say that most mainstream candles contain a lead piece throughout the wick and is not safe to burn in your home, especially with children! If you look down at the wick, you can usually see the silver. My Dillards store in the mall carries fabulous soy candles at very reasonable prices. Anyway, I am so glad to be a part of this group! Warmest Regards, Tanya L telnjml
