Hi Everyone:

I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in getting

together to discuss Animal Rights from a philosophical perspective.

The idea would be to meet once per month or bi-monthly to discuss a

book chapter, paper or even online lecture in an area of animal

rights/liberation philosophy.

Such a group would provide an excellent opportunity to hone our

ability to reply to those who ostensibly attack our beliefs on

rational grounds, as well as acquaint or re-acquaint ourselves with

the excellent work in ethics that's taken place in the last few

decades regarding the moral consideration of nonhuman animals.

Possible Topics:

-->Argument regarding marginal cases (philosophers opposed to animal

rights have been trying to overcome this argument for 33 years with

no success). [singer " Animal Liberation " Chapter 1, or " Practical

Ethics']

-->Animal and morals from the point of view of the major approaches

to applied ethics:

o Rights perspective [Tom Regan]

o Utilitarianism [Peter Singer] and it's dangers

o Ethic of Care [Josephine Donavon] / Feminist approaches

o Noncognitivist approaches

--> " Gotch ya's " , issues and thought experiments

o What's wrong with eating road kill?

If you're interested, please reply or shoot me an email at

pdx_yyz.

Cheers,

Mike

I would be very interested in an AR philosophy group. Where were you thinking of holding it? Are you waiting to see where the majority of people interested in the group live? I would be most interested in the east bay or san fran. What a great idea! Stephanie
